“The Battle of Ortona (20–28 December 1943) was a battle fought between a battalion of German Fallschirmjäger (paratroops) from the German 1st Parachute Division under Generalleutnant Richard Heidrich command, and assaulting Canadian forces from the Canadian 1st Infantry Division under Major General Chris Vokes command.”
I played against Warhorse as the Nationalists and I earned a Minor Loss. It is a good scenario, with a great mix of units. I like the map and terrain which offers options although they are somewhat constrained by the time factor. I feel like it might be improved by being either a turn or two longer, or maybe having the reinforcements arrive earlier. I did not seem plausible to me to earn a victory considering the amount of time spent moving and also taking into account the firepower concentration needed for 1930s era troops to dislodge the entrenched enemy.
To account for the second fact I attempted to mass my forces and attack only the Eastern hill which I only just managed to capture before the time limit using about 75% of my available troops. The follow on reinforcements spent the whole scenario riding in the back of trucks and never got a chance to fight. I believe that if I had split my force to attack both hills there is a better than even chance that I would have taken neither as I would have had to fight across all of the trenches one after another in order instead of coming from both sides at once and with half the firepower.
Overall, it was an interesting scenario (Spanish Civil War! How cool is that?) but the attack values of early war troops make it too easy for a few defenders to stop the attack for long enough that time will run out.
