CS Scenario Rating Questions - Kool Kat - 08-06-2008 Gents: :) I have a few questions on CS scenario ratings and how to interpret them. :conf: 1. Is a scenario with a 3.00 rating considered "balanced" 2. If the above is true... then a scenario with a 3.60 rating would "slightly" favor Side #2 - correct? 3. If the above is true... then a scenario with a 1.20 rating would "greatly" favor Side #1 - correct? 4. Is there a rating range (e.g. 2.50 - 4.00) that scenarios are considered "balanced" (e.g. Side #1 & Side #2 have equal chances of winning - assuming same skill level players)? There is a reason behind my questions. :cool2: Looking for some methodology for picking "balanced" CS scenarios when I resume my PBeM matches. RE: CS Scenario Rating Questions - Huib Versloot - 08-07-2008 Nope: "Rating" 1 to 5 stars says something about the overall quality of the scenario according to those who have played it. The system that calculates rating averages here doesn't work properly for each scenario so it is unreliable. The column "Balance" (only visible when you view individual scns) says something about how the players perceive the scn's balance. 4 is balanced but 3 and 5 can be considered quite balanced as well. So if averybody finds the scn "unbalanced" by rating 1 and 7 for balance, it will show up in the middle and thus as balanced... funny ehhh The column "1st side win %" says something statistically about balance. Finally you can look at the 1st side wins, 2nd side wins and draw columns to draw statistical conclusions about balance. I always look at these latter. Hope this helps Huib -- and I disagree with Hawk's post below . the statistics do say something about balance. The more a scn is played the more reliable they are. RE: CS Scenario Rating Questions - Hawk Kriegsman - 08-07-2008 mwest Wrote:1. Is a scenario with a 3.00 rating considered "balanced" No. 4.00 is balanced. Quote:2. If the above is true... then a scenario with a 3.60 rating would "slightly" favor Side #2 - correct? No again. Anything above a 4.0 favors the Axis side (whether they go first or second) Quote:3. If the above is true... then a scenario with a 1.20 rating would "greatly" favor Side #1 - correct? No again. Anything below a 4.0 favors the Allied side (whether they go first or second) Quote:4. Is there a rating range (e.g. 2.50 - 4.00) that scenarios are considered "balanced" (e.g. Side #1 & Side #2 have equal chances of winning - assuming same skill level players)? No once more. 3.25 to 4.75 can be considered balanced for players of equal ability. Quote:There is a reason behind my questions. :cool2: Of, course there is. :smoke: Quote:Looking for some methodology for picking "balanced" CS scenarios when I resume my PBeM matches. There is no good methodology IMHO. A better indicator is the number of times the sceanrio has been played and the enjoyment factor. Thanx! RE: CS Scenario Rating Questions - Kool Kat - 08-07-2008 Ok gents: :) Starting to get my head around ratings! :cool2: So... e.g. a scenario with an average balance rating (4.86) and average entertainment rating (7.88) translates to.... ... a scenario that "slightly" favors the Axis and has a "high" entertainment value - correct? RE: CS Scenario Rating Questions - Hawk Kriegsman - 08-07-2008 mwest Wrote:Ok gents: :) That is correct sir. Thanx! RE: CS Scenario Rating Questions - Huib Versloot - 08-07-2008 mwest Wrote:Ok gents: :) Yes. But it might still be wise to look at the statistics in the scenario depot columns. Numbers tell you more than people's opinions. RE: CS Scenario Rating Questions - K K Rossokolski - 08-07-2008 The question of "balance" may well be the longest running bone of contention in the CS agree/disagree list. Glad to see it surfacing again. PS my computer still cactus...using Madame's Apple. RE: CS Scenario Rating Questions - Herr Straße Laufer - 08-07-2008 Huib Wrote:mwest Wrote:Ok gents: :) Much truth there, Herr Huib. Here is a statistical example: Campaign Series Scenario - Tank Graveyard at Minsk Historical Date - 02-07-44 Game - EF2 First side - Allies Second side - Axis Size Mod - 3 Turns - 18 First side wins - 205 Second side wins - 206 Draws - 64 Win % - 50 Tested H2H - No Amount of times played - 475 Rating balance - 4.41 This is a perfect illustration of a game that is well balanced for PBEM and has a lot of play. I would look carefully toward the amount of game reports followed by win % and then by "rating" for balance. There are some "gems" that are well balanced by win/loss reports but are rated poorly for balance/enjoyment. As Herr Huib points out, the numbers do tell the tale? RE: CS Scenario Rating Questions - Kool Kat - 08-07-2008 CS Vets! Thank you all for your informative replies! This information will greatly assist me choosing future "balanced" scenarios when I resume my PBeM CS gaming - following the new bug fix patch release. Hope to see you on the battlefield soon! ;) RE: CS Scenario Rating Questions - Von Earlmann - 08-08-2008 I suggest not looking at so called "balance" as much as entertainment..........I have played some lopsided scenarios that were fun......I don't like Minsk scenario..........then again I don't like Bukrin Bridgehead either....I can find very little historical about them...except maybe the date..but then again don't go by me..I'm not a fan of most of the so called stock scenarios....guess I'm a bit of an AR :-) Earl |
