Have you tried the 'Grand Campaign' Mod by Indragnir? I haven't myself yet but have been looking at it recently and at Omaha he uses pillboxes rather than PILLBOXES and although the Alternative Assault rule is used, the infantry hard attack values are higher (particularly for engineers). There are many other changes as well, so you would need to play it to see the overall effect but it may solve some of the problems mentioned. Certainly worth a look for anyone interested in the Normandy campaign.
