Turning it off can save smoke rounds for future use. Common scenario: You park your tank in rough terrain, no movement penalty, awaiting its prey. Said prey pops up at high speed. Your tank opfires and misses at ~40% hit chance. Opponent returns fire at ~5% hit chance ... ... your tank pops smoke rather than return fire at ~60% hit chance ...
