RE: PUBLIC EVENT LOG - SaSTrooP - 01-07-2023

18th September 1944
Battle of Fortress City of Sebes - FINAL RESULT

SOVIET MINOR VICTORY

DUE TO LEFT BANK ASSAULT CAULLED OFF AND THE FACT THAT CERTAIN PARTS OF HUNGARIAN POSITIONS ON THE EAST BANK REMAINED STEADY, AS WELL AS FINAL BRIDGE REMAINED IN HUNGARIAN HANDS, EASTERN BANK UNITS ARE ALLOWED TO RETREAT WITHOUT PENALTIES (OTHERWISE THEY WOULD BE CUT OFF AND SURRENDERED)

SOVIETS ARE IN POSSESSION OF FORTRESS CITY OF SEBES

RE: PUBLIC EVENT LOG - SaSTrooP - 01-07-2023

18th September 1944

Washington Post reports:
"RAther serious blow was dealt to the Hungarian forces today in Transylvania, as the Fortress City of Sebes fell. Medieval location has been overrun apparently by US supplied Sherman tanks in Soviet service. It is said that the city streets are littered with bodies, bodies of mostly Hungarians, who stood fast and during the night retreated the forces through one of the last remaining bridges in their hands.
On the other side, Hungarian armour, including only known Hungarian armor ace, Ervin Tarczay, fended off Soviet offensive action east of Sebes. The battle is said to be the clash of the beasts, as mighty IS-2 heavy tanks facet their German produced counterparts, Panthers and Tigers. Axis units seemed to have an upper hand there...

In other news: Free French Forces advance upon the french town of Arracourt, trying to dislodge German positions there. The Japanese hell ship Jun'yō Maru is sunk off Sumatra by the British submarine Tradewind with the loss of 5,620 lives, the worst maritime disaster in recorded history. Meanwhile American B-17 bombers dropped over 1,284 containers of supplies to the Home Army in Warsaw with the attempt to aid the dying Warsaw Uprising, but only 228 fall on Polish-controlled territory which is diminishing by each hour. It is the first time Soviets allowed USAF to use own bases for refuels, denying any earlier attempt to aid the uprising.

Central Soviet attack directed at previously destroyed town of Seica Mare meets stubborn resistance and with massive Luftwaffe support breaks the attacks. Soviet infantry reaches the town itself, but is forced to retreat due to general situation.

End of 20th September 1944

Magyar Nemzet reports:
"After the previous day major engagements and clashes, 20th looked pretty peacefully, save it for couple of agressive airstrikes and air operations on both sides. It seems that Soviets are steadily advancing towards the river Tarnava Mare. They haven't reached it so far, however these news are not good for the Axis. Neither for the Soviets though - there are still the rivers of Balta and Marusza to be crossed should Soviets would like to even think of reaching Cluj-Napoca.
Things may still change. German tanks were spotted in the area - it so seems that Hungarian front is getting reinforced by the allies..."

The Battle of San Marino ends in Allied victory. San Marino is clear of Axis Forces. Soviet forces capture the island of Suur-Tytärsaari in the Gulf of Finland. The world celebrate release of the pirate film Frenchman's Creek starring Joan Fontaine and Arturo de Córdova.
