News from the front,Normandy June 25 - glennav8 - 02-25-2007 Turn 194 of 750 Cherbourg The 4th and 90th Inf aided by the 82nd AB and various Armored cav units are poised to complete the capture of Cherbourg. The German units in the "Cherbourg pocket" include the heroic 91st Luftlande Div,which has been the keystone to the German defense in the Cherbourg area, remnants of the 243 Inf and 709 Inf and scattered Luftwaffe and Kreigsmarine units make up the rest of the defending German units. Caen The 3rd Canadian Inf Div aided by remnants of the 6th British AB,the 27th Arm Bde and Special Service Bde's have finialy managed to eject the last German defenders from Caen.Bristish forces hold the west bank of the Orne from Sword to Caen and bridgeheads in the Benouville area. The British AB was crushed by units from the 21st Pz and due to the failure of the SWORD landing to advance inland in a timely manner. Hill 112 The combined might of the 7th and 11th Armored Div's along with Infantry support from the 51st Highlanders and the 3rd Inf Div are smashing their way towards this strategic point, meeting stiff resistance from the 12th SS Pz Div and the remains of the 716th Inf and 21st Pz .British armor is poised a mere 2k's from Hill 112 Balleroy The 49th West Riding Div holds Balleroy but is in a stalemate against the 353 Inf and 3rd FJ.A static front has developed with the 49th unable to advance even with armored support from the 33rd Arm Bde. The 50th Northumbrian and the 4th Arm Bde has also stalled in its advance along the main road leading from Bayeux to St Lo,having met stiff resisitance from Pz Lehr,352nd Inf and 2ns Pz units. North Of St Lo The American 1st Inf and 29th Inf are dug in along a front stretching from the Vire river to the British sector west of Balleroy. The American units in this sector are facing the 2nd Pz and 352 Inf div and with little armor support the front is mainly static. St Jean de Daye The American 30th Inf,having been forced to retreat from the town due to a unrelenting counterattack by the 2nd Pz now hold the north bank of the Canal de Vire et Taute. The Germans under cover from last weeks storm and free from air attack launched a successfull counterattack on American forces in this sector. Periers/Lessay area The advance on Coutances begins with the US 2nd Arm div advancing on St Sauveur Lendelin and Montsurvent supported by the 83rd Inf,9th Inf and 79th Inf divisions. The 2nd SS Pz ,17th SS PzG,77th Inf and FJ.Regt 6 stand in the way of the American advance.
