First NZ VC awarded since WW2 - falco - 07-03-2007

The first Victoria Cross awarded to a New Zealander since WWII was just announced yesterday (7/02). Corporal Willy Apiata, braving overwhelming enemy fire, pulled a badly wounded comrade to safety while fighting the Taliban in Afghanistan in 2004.

Apiata was a member of the NZ SAS whose names are not normally made public when decorations are awarded. In view of the likely media interest that this event was likely to generate however , in Apiata's case his name was revealed. http://www.stuff.co.nz/4115901a10.html

A salute for an astonishing act of courage I say.
