First NZ VC awarded since WW2 - falco - 07-03-2007 The first Victoria Cross awarded to a New Zealander since WWII was just announced yesterday (7/02). Corporal Willy Apiata, braving overwhelming enemy fire, pulled a badly wounded comrade to safety while fighting the Taliban in Afghanistan in 2004. Apiata was a member of the NZ SAS whose names are not normally made public when decorations are awarded.
