patroling??? - Richardew - 07-17-2008

What is patroling. Can't find it described anywhere in the documentation that came with B44 but I have seen it mentioned in some threads. I know how to put my units into patroling mode but what does it do for me?

The patrolling rule was added shortly after Minsk came out, and thus is not in the original B44 docs, along with any other changes to the docs and rules of the game that came out after any specific game. You can download the latest docs for B44 to see everything, but pending that, patrolling allows a unit to see all enemy units within 2 hexes, even with line of site blockages - good for patrolling a river bank, I think, and it negates Partisan unit effects within deception range.

It is in the movement section, have you updated your manual? If not think about doing it for one of your titles and make that your reference. ;)

"It is possible to put a unit with men (not vehicles or guns) into a Patrolling state. To do this requires the full movement allowance of the unit and the unit cannot be Broken. While Patrolling, the unit will negate the ability of any Partisan unit within Deception range of having any Deception effects. In addition, a Patrolling unit will be able to spot any enemy unit within 2 hexes, regardless of line-of-sight restrictions. While in a Patrolling state, a unit has a 3/4 assault and fire value. It costs 1/2 of the movement allowance of the unit to recall Patrols. This is done automatically when the unit moves."

I had a feeling that my manual wasn't up to date. What section in the users manual deals with patrolling?

As the post above says, it is in the movement section.

Important to note that although a patrolling unit can "see" enemy units not ordinarily in its LOS, it can't call indirect fire on them (not mentioned in the manual).

Thanks.
