Help me and newbies - Montana Grizz - 07-27-2008 I know the answer to most of this question, but sometimes get confused with the terminology. This can be a major problem when one unloads an artillery piece only to find it cannot fire indirectly: Which of the following units can fire indirectly: Assault guns Howitzers Mortars AT guns Rockets Infantry guns Field guns Mountain guns Recoilless guns AA guns Thank you, Pat RE: Help me and newbies - Herr Straße Laufer - 07-27-2008 Montana Grizz Wrote:I know the answer to most of this question, but sometimes get confused with the terminology. This can be a major problem when one unloads an artillery piece only to find it cannot fire indirectly: The funny thing is that I've seen footage of Shermans in plowed positions that allowed their guns to be eleveated over spec, to allow them to "indirect fire". I am certain the the effectiveness of this was not great. German assault guns were part of the artillery branch but, most did not indirect fire. And, I've seen footage of what looked like a German 88mm AA gun that was used in the artillery role. But, it might have been a special use? RE: Help me and newbies - Von Earlmann - 07-27-2008 As far as I know most assault guns,AT guns, and AA guns cannot fire indirectly.......all the rest can.......but infantry guns aren't very good at that either.....in fact I have found them lucky to hit the ground..........I did not include Self-propelled arty as assault guns......they can also fire indirectly. Earl RE: Help me and newbies - Von Earlmann - 07-27-2008 Of course I think the Germans used the 88 as an indirect fire weapon also..but that is one of those realistic thingys :-) RE: Help me and newbies - Herr Straße Laufer - 07-27-2008 As irony is so ironic. So is realism so ... realistic?:chin: I put SP arty under the field arty category. The Sherman 105 does break that mold along with the Stuart born 75 mm arty. The Stuart-arty, though, can shoot indirectly. RE: Help me and newbies - Hawk Kriegsman - 07-27-2008 BTW if a unit can fire indirectly it has a little mortar icon on the lower left side of the unit box. Thanx! RE: Help me and newbies - Mr. Guberman - 07-27-2008 indeed, the unit ID box, let's you know if a unit can fire indirect fire. Does that answer the question? Cheers Curt RE: Help me and newbies - Montana Grizz - 07-28-2008 Thank you all for your kind responces. The symbol in the unit box answers all my questions. I thought the mortar symbol was an eagle in flight and wondered what that was representative of Thanks again  Pat RE: Help me and newbies - Von Earlmann - 07-28-2008 Actually..it could be an eagle...or a turkey vulture.....or something :-) RE: Help me and newbies - Von Luck - 07-29-2008 :stir:::stir:LOL Depends on who you are playing Earl with the Turkey Vulture sign. |
