Suggestions for good war movies - Weasel - 10-17-2008 I am trying to find some good war movies to rent. By good I mean of the calibre of 12 O' Clock High, The Damn Busters, The Great Escape. So many of the war movies made long ago are just plain lame with a dumb love story woven into them (Sands of Iwo Jima, FHTE, etc etc). Anyone have any suggestions for older type movies that are believable and don't have you yelling at the tv. RE: Suggestions for good war movies - PzHeinZ - 10-17-2008 I could recommend a Finnish war movie Talvisota (The Winter War) made in 1989 (so not sure if it goes to your definition of "old type"...)and directed by Pekka Parikka. IMO by far the best Finnish war movie with no love stories at all.....I´m afraid though it might be hard to find where you live but worth a try. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Talvisota_(film) PzHeinZ RE: Suggestions for good war movies - Panzer VI - 10-17-2008 Saving Private Ryan RE: Suggestions for good war movies - RedDevil - 10-17-2008 Cross of iron The beast Stalingrad Waterloo ( with rod stieger) come and see ( russian) Downfall- not much war action but a damn fine movie, bruno is awesome in portraying hitler. saints and soldiers when trumpets fade paths of glory zulu dawn the lost battalion the wild geese tae guk gi ( korean) the last drop - not much a war action bt good flick never the less the sand pebbles the immortal sgt fixed bayonets pathfinder - good viking action :) kingdom of heaven attack force z the enemy below the bridge over the river kwai RE: Suggestions for good war movies - Walrus - 10-17-2008 Hi Private Ryan...what a crock! Total propaganda mission that was...some good action shots though. About as crap as Black Hawk Down...just cheer leading for the imperialists :stir: Try to find "Kokoda" http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kokoda_(film) it is a decent movie. "Stalingrad" is good also. "The Longest Day"...brilliant tracking shots...and a good recognition that there was more than one nation fighting for the Allies at Normandy. Cheers RE: Suggestions for good war movies - seabolt - 10-17-2008 If you're looking for *old,* then the seminal non-propaganda picture has to be "All Quiet on the Western Front." For WWII, I would hazard that the first film to break the cheerleading mode and dare to show realistic combat was "A Walk in the Sun." You have to get past some truly dreadful opening credits, but about the time that people start dying and doubting---and no one's yet to see an actual German---it starts to dawn that this was a groundbreaking movie. -- 30 -- RE: Suggestions for good war movies - Weasel - 10-17-2008 PzHeinZ Wrote:I could recommend a Finnish war movie Talvisota (The Winter War) made in 1989 (so not sure if it goes to your definition of "old type"...)and directed by Pekka Parikka. Yep got that one, although I will admit I fast forward past all the stuff at the start (home life stuff) and when he goes on leave.
