Some meat on the bone...........

HPS Simulations & John Tiller present
SPANISH CIVIL WAR 1936-1939

Introduction and Overview
With Europe beginning to smoulder after the rise to power of fascists Hitler & Mussolini, tensions quickly came to a boil in the Spanish peninsula between the Republican and Nationalist forces.

From July 1936 to April 1939 war would ravage the country and several hundred thousands would lose their lives.

For several countries this would be a dress rehearsal for the coming conflict of WWII, and for the world it would be a small taste of the horrors to come.

The wargame
Squad Battles: Spanish Civil War gives you the opportunity to command the forces involved fighting in the streets of Madrid and the countryside of Alto de Leon or Somosierra Pass.

This game of Squad Battles focuses on the Battle for Madrid, with all its initial staging, after the Army of Africa is transported onto the mainland and slowly advances towards Madrid to connect with the nationalist forces coming from the North.

It also includes the successive battles aimed at encircling the capital and the ensuing Republican counter-offensives.

The gamer is presented with a wide spectrum of battlefields and of different troop organizations, from the early columns to the later armies.

It also takes the gamer to other locations where combat was intense, such as Teruel (the Stalingrad of the SCW) or the banks of the Ebro and its surrounding mountains.

Good move by HPS, I salute that! I'll definately will be taking a look at this one. Surprised there's no "Gandesa" scn (maybe the list shown is not all the scns included). Some scns in Basque country, Cantabria and Asturias (north of Spain) would be great as well. In all, looks like a very interesting game.

RE: Spanish Civil War-SB - Xaver - 11-08-2008

Well, no Belchite is more surprising, was a vicious close combat house to house, village was destroyed and today you can see the ruins of the old village.

Some pics.

Gandesa was in the line of fire but dont was a battlefield, Gandesa was the key of the republican offensive (some similar to Bastogne).

RE: Spanish Civil War-SB - von Waldenburg - 11-08-2008

There was fighting in an around Gandesa, it was a key road junction as you say, thing is that repubilcan artillery and planes did not participate in the 6 days they were in the offensive (25th July 1938- 1st Agoust 1938) and thus it was not bombarded, there was fighting inside the city during that six days period, but the 8 batallion franquist force (4 understrength) managed to keep republicans from entering the "casco antiguo" (antique urban area in downtown Gandesa) and gaining a definitive hold in the 3.000 people town. We can safely state this was one of the 2 or 3 hottest spots in the battle of Ebro, the battle that some have regarded as the 1st battle of ww2 for their intense use of air units.

Belchite of course a nice battle had it been included, I forgot to mention :)

Guys, thanks for the interest in the title, a couple of notes:

- Gandesa - There are several scenarios covering the battles on the Gandesa area (and also a full map including Gandesa for anyone wanting to do some more)

- Belchite - There is a scenario included in one of the campaigns (can also be played outside the campaign)

- North / Basque Country /etc. - There are some areas not included, the Basque battles are the obvious ones, but there is only as much one can do, it was a conscious option. Having said that, I intend to cover them in the future by releasing some scenarios on those battles.

Did the North/ Basque scenarios ever get released? If not is this area covered in the maps supplied - so someone could make them if the designer doesn't have time?

Thanks.
