Moving HPS Games to New OS - Dirk Gross - 09-14-2009 All, I have 50 HPS games installed in Vista. I'm moving to Win 7, so I need to get those games moved over. I tested simply moving two game folders over to Windows 7 along with the start menu folder. Both games worked OK as far as I can tell. Is there any downside to just moving them over like that? Obviously there are no registry entries doing it this way, but it seems to work. It'll save tons of time compared to reinstalling and patching and adding VM artwork. :chin: RE: Moving HPS Games to New OS - Sgt Jasper - 09-14-2009 Don't know about Win 7, but it works ok for XP, Vista and 98, so I'd think it would in Win 7, too. RE: Moving HPS Games to New OS - Dirk Gross - 09-14-2009 I'm going to go ahead then. Worst that can happen is I have to reinstall a game if problems develop. RE: Moving HPS Games to New OS - Mr Grumpy - 09-15-2009 Good luck, let us know what happens as that info will be useful to other members in the future. ;) RE: Moving HPS Games to New OS - Dirk Gross - 09-15-2009 I posted a similar message at the ACWGC and Rich Hamilton had this to say: "The only draw back I have seen from this approach is it sometimes causes DirectX issues - specifically "failure to create direct sound object" errors. This can usually be resolved by reinstalling a single game within the OS normally. There are registry entries that are referenced, but normally don't cause a problem." I'll watch out for that. RE: Moving HPS Games to New OS - Liquid_Sky - 09-20-2009 It is absolutely safe to move your game folder over to the new computer and play. I back my games up on a USB drive, and when I go to my parents house for the weekend, I just bring it, and play my turns. The registry is used only for saving the values of the Settings. So when you start, you will get the default. (Sound on, Background noise on, etc....) Recently, I had to set up a Linux box, and have been playing my games in a virtual Windows machine. (The game doesnt like Wine too much) RE: Moving HPS Games to New OS - Dirk Gross - 09-26-2009 So far, so good. Other than resetting to default options, several games I'm in pbem are working normally. :whis: RE: Moving HPS Games to New OS - Ostland [SPR] - 09-26-2009 I too use USB Drive. Also I play houses and work on different computers. And All Very GooD....:whis: |
