Winter War. 70 years anniversary. - Stepan - 11-30-2009

70 years ago (November 30 1939), the Soviet-Finnish war began. Seeking a game WW. Any scenario, any side.

The flames of WWII had already started to burn brightly at this point, but the Winter War had a huge influence over the course and direction of WWII. Seeing how the Soviets struggled to subdue their much smaller neighbor, Hitler gained confidence in his plans to invade Russia.

I didn't know much about The Winter War until the playtesting started for the game. I read several books and articles on the conflict, and it has become one of my favorite subjects of the war.

For those not all that familiar with the conflict, here are a couple of good books and sites to consider. I'd highly recommend taking the time to learn about this conflict. If anyone has further links that would be useful, post them here and I'll compile them to put onto Task Force Echo Four's site.

I have another link for anyone who is interested. It's Fire & Ice: The Movie. I don't know how good the book that they're selling is but what I saw of the documentary is 2 ::thumbs_up:! I saw most of it on PBS a couple of years ago; they were having one of their :censored: month long pledge drives and I missed part of the program because it ran really late.

Thanks Gasbag, the document seems to be available in Google videos: http://bit.ly/8kkR2M . Most of the narrative is in English. Some interviews are missing subtitles, though.

Included is an the interview with Jack Hasey, the American who voluntarily founded the Iroquois Ambulance Corps, and shuttled wounded Finnish soldiers to medical care.

"It is against the rules to shoot Americans in this Forest", said the sign near their base. Nevertheless, wounded by a strifing aircraft, he was evacuated to safety and survived the war.

Hi Stepan, I'll give you a game of WW if you are still looking. I have just got the game. Feel free to pick anything you want and send it to me.

There is also a Finnish movie named "Tali Ihantala" portraying the epic battle of 1944. Very good stuff. Especially tank battle scenes are the best I have ever seen. Finns produce suprisingly good war movies for such a small movie industry. You can see parts of the movie at youtube.
