M60 A2 tank bns 1976-78 - FM WarB - 12-14-2009

Would anyone know which U.S. tank battalions were equipped during 1976-78 with M60 A2s?
I was a US tanker during the era on M60 A1s and Sheridans, so a Fulda gap scenario set during this time frame interests me.[/i]

I've been trying to get that info for about a year or so now, although admittedly I haven't been able to devote much time to the search. I know it's out there somewhere - hopefully somone can help.

THERE WERE NO M60A2s REMAINING IN EUROPE DURING THE TIME PERIOD OF THE HPS MODERN CAMPIGNS GAMES:

The M60A2, nicknamed the "Starship" due to its Space Age technology, featured an entirely new low-profile turret with a commander's machine-gun cupola on top, giving the commander a good view and field of fire while under armor but spoiling the low profile. It also featured a 152 mm main gun similar to that of the M551 Sheridan light tank, which fired conventional rounds as well as the Shillelagh anti-tank guided missile (ATGM). The fitting of a CBSS (closed breech scavenger system), which used pressurized air to clear the breech after each shot, solved the problem of unburnt propellant from the main gun rounds fouling the barrel and pre-detonating subsequent rounds. The M60A2 proved a disappointment, though technical advancements would pave the way for future tanks. The Shillelagh/M60A2 system was phased out from active units by 1981, and the turrets scrapped. Most of the M60A2 tanks were rebuilt as M60A3, or the hulls converted to armored vehicle-launched bridge (AVLB) vehicles. [7]

THIS MAY HELP TO ANSWER YOUR QUESTION:

In the mid-1970's, six armored battalions (1st and 3rd Armored Divisions) in Europe were equipped with the M60A2.

3rd Battalion/33rd Armor and 1st Battalion/32nd Armor in 3rd Armor Division were equipped with M60A2s. Discovered this by reading e-mails on the Third Armor Division web page.

Haven't tracked down the other 4 yet! It is out there somewhere.

Wow - great info - only missing thing was the info citing ... not that I think you making it up or anything, but it wouldn't hurt to say where the source of tis great info came from ....and maybe what other nuggets of info might be available.

Glenn, it is very difficult to do that. I am culling info from individual personal e-mail messages ('I was in the ..... ; we were equipped with M60A2s") from all over the 1st and 3rd ARM DIV websites. 3AD info is better than 1AD info.

SO FAR:
1/32 ARM, 3AD
3/33 ARM, 3AD
1/37 ARM, 1AD

had M60A2s.

The first part about there being 6 M60A2 Battalions in Europe was from a simple "GOOGLE" on M60A2, and reading a couple of articles.

I've posted this same question on another board. Give it a couple days & maybe we can get the entire list.

Good info, so far. My memory may be faulty, but I seem to remember seeing M 60 A2s in 8th ID when I was part of 5-68 Armor Bn (M 60 A1) in 1978.

A little more information I was able to gather from the net.

Apparently, the initial idea was to have one M60A2 battalion in each division, the remaining battlaions were M60A1's. So unless one is absolutely committed to historical accuracy, you can kind of use that as a guideline. Enough M60A2's were supposed to be built to equip "8 or 9" battalions, 6 of them in Europe.

Where were those battalions?

We have...

1-32 AR 3AD
3-33 AR 3AD (Kind of shoots down the "one bn per div theory" Cry )
1-67 AR 2AD
1-37 AR 1AD

To further shoot down the "one bn per div" idean we have

1-64 AR
2-64 AR
3-64 AR ...all in the 3ID - although apparently these were mixed M60A1/M60A2 units.

Kind of fun, isn't it. FM WarB mentioned that he maybe recalled seeing A2's in the the 8ID, though he wasn't sure. Actually, you probably are remembering correctly though I haven't been able to determine which battalion.

Now for sources. This is information I picked mostly from archived threads from other forums; that is someone at sometime asking the same question - so I can't guarantee the accuracy of what I have. I did run across a website that has what are, in essence, term papers written by officers at the various command & staff schools. I did find one that probably has all the information we need with all the accompanying cited sources. However, to get the entire paper you have to buy it. In this case it's costs $20 US. I may shell out the cash to get but there's no guarantee it really has the info we're looking for. I probably continue looking for some "free" info for a while yet.

Hope what little I've been able to find helps. If I find out more I'll be sure to post.
