CS and Windows 7 64-bit - Mike Abberton - 01-20-2010 Hello, Are there any known issues for the CS (Matrix edition) and Windows 7 64-bit? I bought a new laptop and am having trouble with a number of games (JTCS being one of them) causing it to freeze up with strange graphical and sound errors. I think it is the laptop, but I thought I would ask around for some ammunition to use for tech support. Thanks in advance for any help, Mike RE: CS and Windows 7 64-bit - Crossroads - 01-20-2010 Just a quick shout to say everything's OK on my W7 PC (an HP desktop). Installed in default directory (not under \Program files). I've noticed only two glitches: Map Editor does not work properly (display corrupts), while the JTCS Unit Viewer does not work at all. Have you looked at the W7 discussion on Matrix site? EDIT: A *very* quick checklist here: http://www.matrixgames.com/forums/tm.asp?m=2276999 There was a good discussion going on also here inBlitz CS forum some time ago... RE: CS and Windows 7 64-bit - TJD - 01-20-2010 I've been running CS on Windows 7 64-bit for a couple of months now without any difficulty. I didn't install into the default directory, however; everything went into C:\Games. That advice was given to me by tech support at HPS for their games and I stuck with it for CS. FWIW, I've been very impressed by Windows 7. Yes, I believe the idea is not to install anything under the C:\Program Files -folders (as was the practice with XP) as these files would require special priviledges... Have you tried running the JTCS unit viewer mod? Managed to get it working? Would like to hear how you did it! RE: CS and Windows 7 64-bit - Larry Reese - 01-21-2010 I've been running on Vista 64-bit for some time, and as we all know, the unit viewer won't work, and there were some problems tweaking the system to play both Talonsoft and Matrix versions simultaneously, but once I got those sorted out it's been very smooth. I've got W7 on my wife's computer and it seems to be relatively good comparison-wise. If the viewer can work under W7 I think I might upgrade. Just as an aside, I never install into the default directories, but that's just me. I also ****can all the "My this-and-that" that Windows comes preset up with. LR PS - another aside - I used to work for HP (and Compaq) and was particularly impressed with the Compaq products (many lines of which were kept in the merger while HP units were phased out). A year ago I purchased a new HP desktop and had two hard drive failures in less than 6 months (after never my whole 30 years of computing ever had a problem) and this was most annoying and expensive too, as we had to have the last drive cracked and scavenged by hand. We are all hostages to our technology. A word to the WISE: Get a back up drive and use it religiously. The newer OSes and drive software seem predisposed to much more fatal hard to recover errors now. Not worth the risk. And the stupid *** HP tech support was worthless - they still have it in the system that I have a French version of Windows .... which I do not. RE: CS and Windows 7 64-bit - Mike Abberton - 01-22-2010 Thanks guys. I am 99.9% sure I have a hardware problem, or possibly a bad copy of Win7 installed. Since they don't give you the bloody OS install disk, I can't try reinstalling. I am mostly building a case before I resort to trying to get Tech Support to admit it is defective. If I can do that the on-line supplier will replace the unit out of their stock rather than having to send it back for "repair". Mike |
