Bridge-building Bug?? - TJD - 02-03-2010

There seems to be a bug with bridge building. If you use regular engineers to first build a light bridge, and then use a specialized bridging engineer to construct a second, vehicular bridge over it in the same hex, the program will not recognize the second bridge. It will persist in thinking only a foot bridge is in place and vehicles will not be able to cross.

I encountered this bug when testing Bart Gauvin's 3rd Pz LCG and then tested it in the Bridge Building bootcamp scenario Jason designed. I ran through it twice, building first a foot bridge and then a vehicle bridge in the same hex. Same result both times.

Put it on the fix-list for 1.05? Or is this old news?

Tim

Hi Tim. After reading the rules which are below, it seems that maybe you can not up grade to a vehicle bridge while the foot bridge is in place. You may have to destroy the foot bridge first and then have a Bridging Eng come in and build the Medium Vehicle bridge. In other words you are asking the program to put 2 bridges in the same hex. This doesn't seem to be the same as having an Eng unit build an IP and then have a Construction Eng build a trench on top of the IP which does work. This is just my best guess. I tried what you did and got same results. So either destroy the foot bridge and then replace it with a vehicle bridge or move to next hex and build the vehicle bridge.

An Undisrupted, unfatigued fully-supplied bridging Engineer unit may attempt to build a vehicle bridge across a hexside stream or river with a 20% chance of success. The procedure is similar to that used for damaging walls or blowing up bridges. In the unit menu, select Lay Vehicle Bridge, select the direction for the bridging attempt, and press Enter. If a vehicle bridge unit, or light modern MTU or AVLB is making the attempt, there is a 60% chance of success. If successful, the Engineer unit will assume a low on ammo status and remain so for the remainder of the scenario. The whole process assumes that the unit is attempting to construct a medium vehicle bridge using specialized materials that the unit has with it. This means that a bridging Engineer platoon may only build one medium bridge during the course of a scenario!

Bridging Engineer units are specialists. They can only build medium vehicle bridges. They many not build light foot bridges, clear mines/obstacles, or blow up/damage walls or bridges. Any Engineer-constructed bridge can be destroyed by any Engineer unit capable of blowing up bridges. The process is identical to that used to blow up regular bridges.

Hi Joe!

Thanks for the reply. You're right, the fix is to do as you say, either destroy the foot bridge first or build the vehicular bridge in the adjoining hex. But it's worth noting that the program apparently doesn't intend to forbid you from building both in the same hex -- if you look at it in 3D you can clearly see that the vehicular bridge is overlaid on the foot bridge. There must be a faily simple coding error that prevents it from seeing & using the second, larger bridge.

Hi Tim good to hear from you, still thinking about the last game we had it was a barn burner :) Yes there are still a number of coding errors in the game and it should be mentioned that some of the arty ranges in the data handbooks do not jive with the actual ranges when the units are on the map.

Take care
