running multiple _alt versions - bwv - 11-18-2010

Currently playing VM's _alt K44 v3 & wanting to start a separate game using v4 (which my opponent emailed me)

Question - I presume I would need a separate install of K44 to run both games concurrently

also there is nothing in the registry for PzC correct? so I can just copy the K44 directory to somewhere else on my HD without reinstalling from the CD?

You can just copy the files over. There are, or at least used to be, registry entries but as long as the game is installed it will run from any folder - and it seems like the registry entries from an install aren't needed any longer now as when I moved to a new computer I didn't have to reinstall the games - but I didn't have the shortcuts on the new system either.

I am compelled to say: David Freer made the _Alt for K44, but yes, it is officially supported on my website (I don't want to take much of the credit). To answer the question though, you should be able to continue playing v3 and also v4 if you install the latest (although David would know better). What I mean is, if you started v3 already, then the scenario data is in your saved game file (either .bte or .btl). The only way this would not work is if some serious changes to the OOB were made, such as deleting units. I am unaware of that having occurred between those two versions.

As Rick says, you can back up the game by just copying the directory and renaming it to something else. You can either keep both duplicate game folders and run them separately as you want, or update the _Alt to v4 and see if both games run without an error then, if so, delete your backup / duplicate game folder.

There were no changes in the OB between V3 & V4.

There were significant changes in the scenarios. As mentioned by others this should not have an impact on existing save games from V3, but to be safe you can copy your whole installation before implementing V4.
