HPS TOC Total War in Europe series - burroughs - 06-05-2012

I can remember that I once raised the issue here, but I didn't feel like tracing that all through the forums here as it was quite some time ago and would consume equally much now perhaps to dig that out - so sorry 'bout that , but I am affraid I am a kind of multiplying my previous post ... perhaps it would be handier to have something like the option in the menu allowing a forum member to quickly refer to all his previous posts and maybe even all the answers he posted to somebody else's ones. Didn't find anything like that here so ...

Is there any interest in those games? I saw here that quite a few people played the scenarios off the first installment in the series, but rarely anybody has bothered to PBEM the Southern Front.I am asking as I am not sure if it is really worthy to follow the path in depth, but I can remember I used to be quite cold about the Panzer Campaigns and all their offshoots only to end up totally fascinated and engrossed later on so maybe I have been missing here something equally rewarding ... Besides neither PC title covers the Polish Defence War '39 or the Invasion of Norway '40 etc.

I'd particularily like to hear some people who have played them in the PBEM mode commenting here, if I may ask.

Using the "search" tool which is located just above "Current time" and "Open buddy list" i put in your username and the TOC forum and found your old post in about ten seconds, it is here https://www.theblitz.club/message_boards/showthread.php?tid=59636, so there are tools here to make your life easier. ;)

I tried the WSF title as i am a big desert warfare fan, but i just could not work out how the system worked or any understanding of the combat results i was seeing, added to that was the fact you could surround your opponents units with ease because of the "you go, I go" system and i gave up on it, especially when F14 arrived.

So i am not saying it is a bad title or any less worthy of learning than PzC, but personally i could not get on with it.

Me too, me too ROTFLMAO I guess I have never used any of those options above so I have been missing that opportunity. Well, I have always known that there is always more to learn, no matter what the subject is.

Thanks for all the support and comments, I indeed cloned my previous post, but from a bit different angle I daresay so I hope I don't get kicked out of here due to my shortcomings - it's been really great here so far and am still hoping for lots more to come.

I've played Scenario #217 PBEM from WSF (The British Hold the Line). Armor units in these games are really powerful since they can move-attack-move. In conjunction with infantry they can achieve some major encirclements.

Rails and rail repair units are very important since they keep your armies in supply.

Took me a while to figure out what was going on but once I did I realized that they are good games.

Of course not, nobody will ever get into trouble for asking questions or not knowing every feature of the site. Big Grin

I used to have the first one and it did show promise to a point of being able to eventually have all of ww2 at least in Europe which also would lend to a post ww2 to present type of game as well for a ww3 or other lesser conflicts and some that never were etc. My problem is there was not enough detail. Once I played the PzCs with strength in men, guns and vehicles, the strength point system just doesn't cut it for me. Also, when doing an attack, you get an idea of success or not, so you can add another unit and your probable outcome changes in your favor, but not enough, you add another and it falls to way better for you, then you do the attack. One is not supposed to know what the outcome of the battle will most likely be prior to the attack. That should be left to a determination on the player's part, not handed to him by the puter. Now if they could make those games better and more along the lines of WitP:AE, maybe not as complex, but enough details would get me real interested again. A good mix of something similar to PzCs, BoB/BotR and a good naval game would make for a great game of ww2 to present day. A much better, realistic easier to play and much better details than the game Superpower. I like the real units/squadrons/ships than a generic number of 17 F16s or 25,000 men etc etc. Every game where one can create units should have a list of real units to choose from. If all of a type have been used, then add your own.

There in TOAW III exists something as the attack planner, allowing one to manage his assaults and calculating the likely odds in numbers etc., but the fact is that I don't use it at all , depending more on my assessment of the combat readiness of the unit, the level of exhaustion, supply and readiness etc., the terrain and the weather on top of it all - besides the estimated results are sometimes far from the those achieved in reality; mostly it shows very discouraging prognostics regaring the overall chances of success and the casualty level. That does not diminish the game's greatness, if that wasn't for certain aspects of the command structure and handling of mobile warfare.

I also agree with what you said abut the level of detail - in TOAW III I like each unit and subunit being assembled from certain types of equipment with its distinctive capabilities and parameters - the number, state and condition of the men and equipment affects greatly the unit's likely performance.

Still not sure if to pursue that path ...

What's really good for a change?

That would be cool, but I'm too old, too broke and too stupid. The best I could do is lend ideas that I think would make things better. Big Grin2
