Has anyone played...? - Weasel - 03-10-2015

Panzer Command: Ostfront and if so how does it compare to CM2 game wise and such. I see you get a ton of toys to play with in O.F. and it looks sort of like CM1 from the screen shots.

Curious.

I played it. Fun title IMO. I didn't own the other Panzer Command titles, so it was new to me. It got lost in cyber space when CMBN got released days before it. Good graphics for the age of the game engine. Lots of equipment and maps.

It's based on a set of miniature rules.

Company/ Platoon level game. Squads are linked together thru orders, but you can send/ order
squads/ tanks too.

Turns are 20 seconds vs CM's 60. Issue orders and watch 20 seconds etc.

I liked it, but people flocked to CMBN and now there is a small group updating/ playing it.

Thanks. So it appears to run on sort of the same principle as CM1 then, IGUG:replay instead of how CM2 does it.

Being company level the battles will be small then eh?

RE: Has anyone played...? - Richie61 - 03-11-2015

There is another update coming soon (within days) I have read.

Scenarios can be small to large. There are lots of them in the base game.

There is a "Randomly Generated Battles" feature, Historical Campaigns and Historical Scenarios - thought there were around 70 or more

Mobius is one of the designers/ map/ model maker. He did a "killer" Stalingrad Station map!

Really cool equipment in the game too.

Hey, you know what was awesome about that video, the infantry came to a waypoint and turned the corner without stopping, standing still, then running back and then to the waypoint again before carrying on.

Updates are free?

Demo? (didn't see one on matrix).

I had Pz Command:Ostfront but it's not quite as graphically good looking as CMx2.
On the plus side it covers the entire Ost war 1941-45 and you get kool snowy landscapes each winter, the winter attempt by a German battlegroup to relieve Stalingrad is especially dramatic.
Virtually every type of German/Russian tank/gun/infantry units that were used in the war are in the game.
There's also a slow-motion replay feature where you can replay and analyse what went on during the turn.
Overall I'd rate it about the same as CMx2 complexity-wise, but I was put off by its poorer graphics.

Demo:
ftp://ftp.matrixgames.com/pub/PanzerCommandOstfront/PanzerCommandOstfront-Demo-v329.zip

All updates are free. Game has a start screen where you can change options and check for updates.

Being that I started playing CMBO in 1999, I found the system different to use. But as I messed around with it more I started to understand it. It's funny that I started playing board games with my boys and
noticed that most are split into sections like PCO.

My board games are like this:
Initiative
Command Phase
Fire Phase
Movement Phase
Defensive Fire Phase
Advance and Assault Phase
After-Action Phase

Now I look at PCO's system as normal.

Incidentally if anybody's looking for alternative WW2 tactical games, I'd thoroughly recommend Ironfront Liberation 1944 because it's totally immersive, you can almost smell the wheatfields and the vehicle exhausts, its only drawback is that it's realtime with no pbem option, so you have to either play it solitaire or find an online multiplayer group to play with..:)

From the second video it appears that IF is basically like Panzer Elite?
