Soviet paradrops 1941 - jonnymacbrown - 06-14-2015 Anybody know anything about a Soviet paradrop @ Medyn in the Battle of Moscow? M41 Campaign game indicates a drop there on Nov. 20, 1941. Thanks jonny RE: Soviet paradrops 1941 - wildb - 06-14-2015 The book: World War II Airborne Warfare Tactics By Gordon L. Rottman page 62 has three paragraphs about the operation. It occurred on the night of 2/3 January 1942 two coordinated air drops were executed on drop zones about 7.5 miles apart. Only 31 aircraft were available to support the operation. Units 1st Bn 201st Abn Bde dropped in the vicinity of Gusevo. Western Airborne detachment and elements of the 250th Independent Rifle Regt (abn) dropped in the vicinity of Bolshoye and Fatyanovo. This news makes sense in light of the Red Army counter-offensive 1941-42. However, the M 41 Max German Effort scenario lists 3 possible airdrops on November 20th, well behind German lines, in effect suicide missions; one listed as "Historical" @ Medyn. All I can conclude is that this is all fantasy??? jonny RE: Soviet paradrops 1941 - Strela - 06-15-2015 In Glantz's 'The Soviet Airborne Experience' he mentions that there was no significant airborne drops before the aforementioned January drop. Glantz clarifies with the comment 'In summary, during the opening months of the war, actual airborne operations were limited to occasional diversionary airdrops, as elite Soviet airborne troops fought as infantrymen'. Taken from the same source there were three air drops during the Winter counteroffensive - all were included in M'42. The first is on the 2/3/4 January as mentioned with two units landing NW & SW of Medyn (the red square in each shot represents the paradrop target hex); The second was the attempt to take the airfield near Znamenka on Jan 18th. This was a critical operation because the German front was collapsing and any sizable force at Znamenka would cut both supplies and a key retreat route. The first drop was relatively close to the field; The second drop was well to the south and included glider borne troops; The third drop was the largest of the winter operations and included all of 8th Airborne Brigade being dropped near Vyazma. With insufficient lift the drop was spread over four days and ultimately mopped up. Many of these airborne troops went on to join the growing partisan bands east of Smolensk; David |
