Malmedy, I can't find this bridge on GE Streetview - PoorOldSpike - 07-10-2015 The original caption is "US engineers mining a bridge in Malmedy" I've been trying to find the exact location on Google Earth street view so I can see how it looks today, but have drawn a blank. We can see the letters 'MEDY' on a building towards the top right which would seem to confirm it is Malmedy, but I can't pinpoint the bridge in street view. Anybody with GE:SV want to have a shot at finding it? RE: Malmedy, I can't find this bridge on GE Streetview - ekrommen - 07-11-2015 I like looking for these. That "MEDY" is a great clue. It shows the caption is probably correct and that the negative isnt reversed. I think the key clues are
There are two places in Malmedy that look like this along the Warchenne: My favorite is the easternmost, Rue Neuve. It generally fits and it looks like some of the building roof patterns are the same in the distance: RE: Malmedy, I can't find this bridge on GE Streetview - Ricky B - 07-11-2015 Good find, and I agree, it almost has to be the eastern location, unless everything to the left of the bridge was torn out post war and replaced by the clinic shown. Here is a video that covers the bridge also, showing more of the surrounding buildings, once it gets past the start. http://www.criticalpast.com/video/65675044503_bridge_Malmedy-sector_trinitrotoluene_engineers_soldiers-guard Rick RE: Malmedy, I can't find this bridge on GE Streetview - ekrommen - 07-11-2015 Wow that video is a great find. The buildings are totally different! But I think it is the same bridge, looking south rather than north as in PoorOldSpikes's picture. If it is the same bridge, then we have a match as the buildings looking south match exactly: (07-11-2015, 01:34 AM)Ricky B Wrote: Good find, and I agree, it almost has to be the eastern location, unless everything to the left of the bridge was torn out post war and replaced by the clinic shown. RE: Malmedy, I can't find this bridge on GE Streetview - Ricky B - 07-11-2015 Same bridge as in POS's shot, I am nearly positive. Some of the video stills show similar signage and buildings as above, and the explosives on the bridge match in placement. Unless they were filming more than one bridge, which is possible. RE: Malmedy, I can't find this bridge on GE Streetview - ekrommen - 07-11-2015 Heres another video from the same collection. At 00:40, it shows the bridge in side view/north/south...it does appear to be one bridge. http://www.criticalpast.com/video/65675044525_American-troops_roadblock_50-caliber-machine-guns_90-mm-gun_trinitrotoluene RE: Malmedy, I can't find this bridge on GE Streetview - PoorOldSpike - 07-11-2015 Yes guys you've cracked it, high fives all round..:) Here's the modern view across the bridge looking north up Rue Neuve, you'd hardly guess there's a bridge there- The bridge is circled- Zoomed in, the arrow is looking north up Rue Neuve. The blue line is the course of the brook- Looking west over the parapet, it's only a tiny brook heavily overgrown with trees- Looking east over the other parapet, the brook is down there somewhere- Looking south across the bridge- RE: Malmedy, I can't find this bridge on GE Streetview - PoorOldSpike - 07-20-2015 I just got this email from Malmedy Tourist Office confirming it is Rue Neuve- Bonjour, Ville : Malmedy Rue : rue neuve Bien à vous, Jean Maus Syndicat d’Initiative de Malmedy |
