Budapest '45 Prelude Balance? - Don Czirr - 01-13-2016 Looking to potentially kick this off against the AI as the Axis. Was wondering if anyone had played as the Axis and if so, what you thought about the play balance for this scenario? The AI generally speaking does not do well on the attack, even more so if the scenario/map is large.. I would play this as hotseat . If you take a day or so between turns you tend to forget what you did on the other side so there is a FOW aspect. True - but due to the insanity of my work, I'm not a dependable PBEM partner - so I play the AI and he never complains even when I go weeks without doing a turn. Thanks for the suggestion on the hot seat play further up. Between the gaps in play and my steadily advancing, middle-aged senility, it should make for a good challenge. I'll give it a whirl either way ... "Prelude" seems like an interesting situation : How fast can the Soviets trample over Hungarian speed bumps down South before strong German armor is released and big VP areas can be reinforced in Budapest .... RE: Budapest '45 Prelude Balance? - Many Mariuses - 01-17-2016 Hi, I'm in the middle of playing this one as the Axis against one of my regular PBEM opponents. It's actually pretty frustrating because the Axis has little to do but take its lumps. The Hungarian units have virtually no combat power. Consequently the Soviets can easily tear large holes in the Axis lines. The German Panzer divisions are few and far between, and by 1945, the Soviet armored brigades hold their own quite well. However, I have no idea how the scenario would work against AI. RE: Budapest '45 Prelude Balance? - Don Czirr - 01-17-2016 Thanks for that input Marius. I saw that the Scheduled forces for the Axis seemed to be significant (after 2 days) and thought that the whole thing might be about using Hungarian speed bumps in depth effectively (by slowing not killing) until the German Scheduled / Fixed units were released. Perhaps they arrive / are released too late? Since history happened as it did, perhaps that addresses the historical accuracy but may not satisfy the fun factor. On the other hand, IIRC, the Soviet victory requirement seems rather steep? And forces them to take all or most of the Budapest VP areas? Does it seem like you may be able to defend Budapest at all or are the Soviet just too overwhelming? RE: Budapest '45 Prelude Balance? - Many Mariuses - 01-18-2016 Don, Your approach might yield better results than mine. I probably tried to stand and fight too much for my own good. On the other hand, at this point in the scenario (turn 38), the Soviets have only advanced 20-30 hexes, and Budapest is still a long way away. One lesson that I think the PanzerCrack (my affectionate nickname) series does a nice job of reinforcing is that warfare is rarely fair. The downside is that it can be tough to find a good balanced scenario for PBEM purposes. RE: Budapest '45 Prelude Balance? - Don Czirr - 01-19-2016 I'll let you know how I make out as well. An interesting thing to note is that (unlike most of the entries) there are no recommendations on sides to play and there is no HTH version of the scenario for Prelude. So - I guess we'll need to learn the hard way ;) |
