High peformance american muscle cars of the 60/70s - RedDevil - 04-27-2016

Just a little thread to get some talking going Wink

Anyone care to share some of their experiences with pure raw horsepower from the 60s/70s?

Faster than most?  fastest ever? coolest?

Anyone who believes that those engines were actually putting out the "rated HP" listed is naive beyond imagination

Big Laugh

Fastest  highway ride ever...  66 Buick Riviera  425 4bb, slightly modified...   the dotted lines on the interstate were one solid white line and we KNOW we were doing every bit of 140+ and that boat was just as smooth as sitting in a hammock on a summer afternoon...I have never been in anything faster than that car yet, although Stinky's 69 Mach1 rates pretty close.

quickest ride ever.. I rode in Camp Stanley's  "Call of the Wild" Camaro  across the valley mall parking lot after a show.. 7 second 1/4 mile... although we didn't do that.. he did punch it and I was in love with speed since that day!

Coolest ride ever..  I got to ride along in a 67 chevelle 502CI, 2 4BBs owned by Mr High from WVa, that literally tore the asphalt from the road and left grooves where he launched from.. I saw that engine redline at 11500RPM and it really made your chest hurt when it rev-ed up.

I personally had a '73 Cutlass Supreme, with a 350 SB Chevy .60 overbore that ran a 13.44 1/4 mile with street tires and closed exhaust, probably could have hit 12s with it with some slicks and open headers  Big Grin
I used to have a 74 Nova hatchback, but it fell apart literally, and I do mean literally.. when I put that SB Chevy engine in it, that I eventually put in the Olds....

Never had a big block, maybe for my midlife crisis... Jester

I owned a Datsun 260Z with dual side draft carbs on Holly's; going up hill I could drop it into 4th, hit the gas and it would push you back into your seat. I would love to own a '57 Chevy! My friend is building a T-bucket with his 13 year old son, aiming to have it done when he is 16.

We had a '57 when i was young. As a child I thought it was a tank!
At the root beer stand drive in on a Saturday night, when my mom was driving, if she and another car were coming done the aisle to get the last spot to park for service on a busy summer evening, she would pop the clutch as the cars approached each other head on. She always got her spot! LOL.
