What happened was our Tory (in US Terms think Republican) Prime Minister , equivalent to your President (Barack Obama), has had a lot of trouble with his party who intensely dislike Europe and would instead love the USA. So he offered the whole UK (England, Scotland, Wales & Northern Ireland) the chance to vote on whether the UK should stay in the European Union, fully expecting to win - after all its a stupid politician who calls a vote he cant lose !. However the Leave campaign had some good campaigners for their cause and their campaign actually offered something different to the electorate which was appealing (for example UK was sending £350 million to the EU each week which could be used elsewhere, restricting immigration), Whereas the Remain campaign warned of financial Armageddon if we left, and to be honest both sides campaigns were depressingly negative - the campaigns didnt affect the way I voted ( I voted remain). Still our mistake will be Trumped if the Donald becomes President in November !
