PzC Eastern Front Titles and Map Mod - Kool Kat - 09-10-2016

Gents:  Smoke7

I am looking to expand my PzC titles (who is not?  Wink ) and need some advice.

(1.) Looking to purchase Kharkov 42, Kharkov 43 or Minsk 44.

Purchase criteria: With the above PzC titles, which games feature maneuver, vast sweeping offensives, encirclement opportunities and lightening offensives against fairly even strength enemy forces? Looking for "balanced" PBeM medium (30 - 50 turns) and large (80+ turns) scenarios. I enjoy the mid-war time period (Equipment / units) on the Eastern Front.

In other words, limited winter / mud conditions - no "trench" / static warfare please!   Wink

Words of advice?  Idea2

(2.) Do HPS or JT branded PzC titles work better with Map Mod?

I MUST be able to apply / use Map Mod on any purchased PzC title... so my eye balls will not "bleed" from staring at the stock graphics!   Yikes

Again, any words of advice? Idea2

Many thanks in advance gents! Smoke7

For pure maneuver and offensive power for both sides, I like K'42 the best. Both sides get to attack. The Soviet attacks, if well done, will give the Axis fits (the Rumanians are holding a fair amount of front in this one, in the big campaign anyway), and the German Panzer Divs can slice up the Soviet units, once they are released into action.

K'43 has a lot of interesting actions, but is definitely slower paced. There is room for maneuver, but with the snow on the ground, things move along more slowly.

M'44 has some actions for the Germans, but it is mostly about the Soviets crushing the Germans. Although the Germans can put up a fight, it is even tougher here than in reality for the Germans, to keep things together in the big one.

I can't answer the question about MapMod however.

Rick

Hi Mike!

I agree with Rick-although I do like Kharkov '43 and it's wide openness...movement is slow, but you have vast stretches of your line that have no troops to hold...makes road junctions critical, especially with the snow. The new unit icons and map on Kharkov '43 are sooo much better than the old stock versions, imo.

On the map mod question...I'm pretty sure you can still download those from Jison's site-I  know he doesn't update them anymore but they are still available, as well as Volcano Man's unit art-I can't play without them!

Cheers, Jon

Hi Mike, if you get K'42, my 2D/3D mod definitely works with it, the 3D is so much better than stock.

A little late to this thread, but better late than never.

I don't have K42 or K43 so can't comment on them, although K42 sounds much more appealing to me.

I found Minsk 44 very tedious (playing as Sov)--attacking fortified positions then moving along limited roads in difficult terrain and crossing lots of rivers. Frankly it become as much an exercise in traffic management as anything else. Didn't enjoy it.

But don't forget about Smolensk 41--it is not on your list but it is one of the best east front games I've played--lots of maneuver and surprises.

For the PC titles still using the "old" graphics all MapMod mods should still work without a problem.
For the titles using the new graphics taken from Panzer Battles you can still use the Map Mods if also use my mod:

Currently the titles with new graphics seem to be Moscow 42 and Kharkov 43 only.

The answer is 'it depends': if the titles are using the new style graphics eg:

http://johntillersoftware.com/PanzerCampaigns/Minsk44/m44_ss4.png  -then you would need to probably dig up what David Freer was working with, if you want to use Mapmod. Generally that is what you are going to be getting with a download.

If you are using something that doesn't exactly look like that ( no elevation hexside graphics), as in something like what you would find on a disk published by HPS - then you'll be ok, until what point that you apply the latest update. I think most are still hosted on the HPS site (for PzC - in the latest version), but at what point something else is released, then you will probably be getting the updated graphics.

Indeed, I hadn't checked the shop on screenshoots.
If all the old HPS releases now as JTS downloads use the PB graphics it's a real mess because no PC JTS title would be compatible anymore with the MapdMod series.

A bit disappointing because the new graphics were unnecessary(except the elevation thing) while a patch for the problem with fatigue & combining units is more than overdue.

Ok this confirms the reason for my earlier rant on owners of the original HPSSIMS games by Mr John Tiller being treated as second class citizens, all the original games have been patched up and sold again as a download version.
I.E. re-packaged.
So can I contact Tiller support and ask for the latest patch/update, slopes and all, for all my OLD games.
Group photo of the complete set can be supplied on request.
