Auto Defensive Fire questions - 19 Delta - 02-13-2018

Auto Defensive Fire

1) Are units set on auto defensive fire allowed to fire more then once ?

2)  What exactly triggers auto defencive fire, from my understanding in the manual/rules movment and firing of opposing units with in range barring any adjustments on the A/I ranges. .... is there other factors not covered in the manual ?

Yes, the units can fire multiple times. Very different to ADF being off.

It's up to the AI as to when it is triggered. I've seen whole divisions shot up by a single artillery battery in a turn. Similarly I've experienced units walking up to a battery and meleeing it without a shot fired.

Intresting , thanks for the reply . I played  through the  1776 Campaign along with 1812 with ADF turned off   . I enjoy the numerous individual phases but decided not to in MAW to get some insight and feel with the game play difference before jumping into a PBEM.

Is there a design reason for this , besides reducing the file transfer rate I'm not understanding the multiple opportunity to fire but not implemented in the ADF off option ?

thanks again

I would hazard a guess and say it's to stop gamey behaviour. If the AI only had a single shot and isn't able to decide on a suitable target, a player will simply dance his or her skirmishers out front until the unit has fired. No Opportunity Fire Against Skirmishers ON eliminates that tactic. But I'm guessing that was the original reason.

You will certainly see a difference in gameplay when doing PBEM. Your mistakes can be mercilessly punished in a way the AI won't. My advice with PBEM is play a number of different people until you find a playing style and personality you are comfortable with.

Great point,  I never considered the game tactics as reasoning.

Thanks for the advice and insight.

It should also be noted that the opportunity fire the AI conducts is at 50% effectiveness.
