Book suggestions - Stejones82 - 07-05-2018

Greetings all,

I find my remembrance of Republican Diplomatic and Military history is a bit, well, faded.  I guess it has been 30 years since serious study.  Anyway, looking for recommendations on books in English discussing military campaigns, strategy and tactics to coincide with Republican Bayonets on the Rhine.

Many thanks in advance!!

PS:  can anyone speak to the "Essential History" series:   https://smile.amazon.com/French-Revolutionary-Wars-Essential-Histories/dp/1841762830/ref=sr_1_fkmr2_3?ie=UTF8&qid=1530797250&sr=8-3-fkmr2&keywords=french+republic+1st+coalition+wars

I was on the play test team for the game. If you look at the Notes.pdf document under the main directory you will find a listing at the end of all the source material (including some really good books) we used as references for developing the game. Hope you enjoy the game.

I'm reading right now : The Art of War of Revolutionary France by Griffith and The Armies of the First French Republic by Weston. The first one is very good ; the five Weston volumes are pretty unequal.

BTW, there is many good books in French. I read in French some time ago Bonaparte en Italie by Guglielmo Ferrero (english translation from italian : The gamble - Bonaparte in Italy). It made me think a lot about the "military revolution" of the French Revolution (maybe more a philosophy book than a military history book). I really recommend it.

A must read for anyone that really wants to better understand about the French army of this period is Bayonets of the Republic – John A. Lynn. I had looked over this book years ago but Paco Palomo, one of my playtesters/researchers, suggested I give it a read again. It has a lot of great info on not only how the French fought but how the First and Second Amalgamations came about.

Place that one on your "short list" guys. ;)
