Ode to Berto - Jason Petho - 02-25-2024

It is with great sadness that I am informing you that Robert "Berto" Osterlund has passed away this morning. As the programmer, Berto has been pivotal in the growth of the Campaign Series capabilities and making the Campaign Series games what they are today. Berto and his exceptional expertise will be sorely missed. Our team offers our condolences to his family.

Truly very very sorry to hear about berto.

I am proud to be a member of the beta brigade and have tested his game code and engine for future players existing or new! He will be missed for everything he did to move the Campaign Series forward!!

He will be truly missed in the halls of the Campaign Series!!! Thumbs Up

RE: Ode to Berto - Crossroads - 02-25-2024

We've lost a gem with Berto, not only a great programmer, but a board and computer wargamer and a military history buff as well. His great contribution was to become fluent in most if not all Tiller engines, both at Campaign Series Legion for the Matrix owned Tiller code branch, as well as for the other engines Wargame Design Studio took over from John Tiller Software.

He shone in not only maintaining and adding new features to existing codebase, but he also designed and coded a full Lua based Event Engine to Campaign Series side of things. I am not quite aware of all things with our WDS colleagues, I hope he had the time to implement it there, too. It is quite something, and all about his vision as how a modern game AI should run.

All that, and a top guy with a great sense of humour.

Rest in peace, Berto.

For One and All :

Condolences to "Berto" family and gamer cronies.

What little I know about the man but a gracious code
genius.

I had the privilege to receive a reply to a Panzer Battles
concern as he was working on coding for that game system
as well. One smart dude, that guy.

Providence assured
Rock On !

Huge loss for our community and hobby. Will be sorely missed. Condolences to his Kin and Kind.

RE: Ode to Berto - Scud - 02-26-2024

He was a nice guy, as well as a great programmer. An economics major from the University of Chicago who found a love of programming in his later years. I enjoyed the private conversations I had with him that strayed a bit from CS and into our personal lives. I'm sad he's gone. Rest in peace, Berto.

That is truly a sad bit of news to hear today. What a great talent to lose. Condolences to his family and friends.
