Perhaps I ought to have clarified right at the start, the units were both disrupted and isolated and had no route to retreat.
My mind at my original post was more of a "Bloody hell isn't that amazing?"
Having read the above, it also made me think about the old adage of
"Give enough monkeys a typewriter and long enough time and one will produce the complete works of Shakespeare"
I dare say we aren't dealing with nearly as many paramaters (keys) as the monkeys and occasionally the numbers will come up and produce funny answers. We all tend to notice patterns and ascribe explanations to them even when there may be there by chance (look at astrology).
Having said all this I have also learned ways to maximise the enemy losses from other players, which is also part of my asking in the first place.
Yes, I have seen my share of heroic last stands. Even though the basic pattern happens most of the time, once it a great while, you roll snake eyes and your assaulting unit disrupts instead of gaining the gaggle of prisoners. That can lead to all kinds of things, but mostly a blank stare at the screen....
