As a history buff it is amusing to me to see that the game designers got this right, too. All through the war, US armor officers debated whether carrying their infantry in trucks to simplify maintenence would more than offset any slight loss in protection. As far as I can tell, the position in the debate did not have much to do with whether the speaker was actually riding the point. The armored infantry used halftracks to the end simply because they had already been manufactured, and there was a recognized benefit in cross-country mobility.
