Another new player promotion idea: mentoring...
In addition to the annual ladder idea, which would greatly appeal to new players, a mentoring system could be implemented here to aid new players.

The existing "system" now is a newbie will post an ad for a game here. He will then get offers from people. Many of them are veteran players. Part of this may be because the vets anticipate easy ladder points, but much of it is because other veterans rarely post as they have an established bunch of players already - they can just send PMs between each other. So the new guy promptly gets stomped a few times - his AI inflated dreams that he might actually be good at this game are smashed, and he leaves the site, never to return.

How about a mentoring system that rewards both the vets and the newbies? We already have a scenario testing area where players get points based on scenario size regardless of who wins. (No win or loss is recorded.) Why can't this be done in a mentoring system? Say, a newbie here can get his first three games here free - getting points for them and getting him out of bootcamp. (He gets points whether he wins or loses.) The vet gets ladder points too, but no win or loss is recorded. You could say the vet has to be at least a centurion (100 games recorded) here to qualify as a mentor.

This would encourage teaching and learning in a competition free situation, and even if the new guy loses all three, he can still start out with some points and still be 0-0 and better equipped to swim with the big fish in the future. The vet is happy with his ladder points and the new guy gets some points and (less painful) education.

But what if the new guy is also a vet player? (Sometimes we get guys from other clubs.) Well, if he wants to he can get the three free games and get to know some guys. If he doesn't want to he can skip the mentoring.

Good idea. Not everybody has thick enough skin to be destroyed a few times and continue to be motivated enough not to give up. Again I like this idea.

Talk to Weasel on SP Bootie. He pioneered Mentoring here at the Blitz and has been successfully running a Mentors program there for several years.
