Well done!
Before I had the chance to answer...you worked it out.
Good form!

As far as I am concerned it is bad form to use fast arty in PBEM.
You can gather much intel from watching the arty replay and it is unsporting to deny that to your opponent by using fast arty.

As you have worked out, if you have fast arty switched on, it is your opponent who fails to see the replay.

It is a habit from playing the AI as far as I can tell...and fair enough when playing the computer.

As always, it is possible to negotiate with your opponent about this.
If you are playing a massive battle, and neither of you wish to watch all the arty land...then by all means, switch Fast Arty to ON.
I would recommend however that you start a PBEM battle with it switched off :-)
