As long as we're talking about the Gold series - I agree with the OP  about not liking the pastel ground colors. 

How can I get the more natural, darker terrain colors back?

Hi Tom, on the next page in this forum, read " Art Mods " I inserted a link to a old thread which contains a mod.
Please read it carefully before installing, as it was upgraded.
You are allowed to copy any game for your own use, therefore I would copy a game to a temp folder and try out the mod before inserting it to the vanilla version.
But the best thing to do is don't touch the original, just mod and play the mod game in the Temp folder.

EDIT: You could just use the ground tiles instead of the full mod.
