Possible bug?
I thought I would check here before going over to shrapnel.

I just watch two LANDED Heuy's get shot down. Has anyone else had a LANDED helio get shot down? I have never seen that before and I have shot up landed helios and had my landed helios shot up and it was nothing like what happened here.

RE: Possible bug?
How did they get shot down (AA, SAM's, something else)? And how much cover where they behind?

RE: Possible bug?
yeah - it was awesome.. flaming debris everywhere.. but the landed helo I nailed was on the fwd slope of a hill, and in LOS of my gun (on another hill) - well sort of - the radar could see it 45 hexes away while visibility was 30..

I really like those Swedish Arkan 40mm's..

RE: Possible bug?
Narwan, in a clearing in dense woods, level zero, with several tree hexes between them and any elevatons, which were beyond Vis range anyway. I'm 99% sure they are radar guided 57mm AA guns. Radar guided missiles can and should be able to shoot around (over?) hills and LOS obstacles, but not guns. I wonder if the guns are using the to-hit algorythm for missiles. That would explain it. It's no biggie, it just seems inconsistent. I am also a little worried that because I didn't drop off any passengers after landing, the program might have raised the helios back up to low level. That does concern me, since I land my helios a lot to avoid Flak.
I have saved both sides of the turn.

IIRC, those were the Chinese clones of the SA-6, which wasn't that bad a SAM. No, It was a game against Zeiss, he thought it was normal, I don't think he noticed they were landed.
I think the way it works is that if they have radar and they are in range, you can shoot at them. I'd guess the program doesn't check LOS like it would with a tank or ATGM. Since it isn't checking for LOS, you basically have a gun that shoots around corners. I can deal with that, so long as I know ahead of time what the program is.
BTW, do you want to do the US Civil War thingie? How about Saddam vs the Saudi's in '90? Holding on until the Meatbombs hit.

RE: Possible bug?
Hi Grumbler, it is indeed possible to shoot with a bend. But only with a slight bend. I'm not privy to the exact factors but AFAIK a radar guided weapon can hit targets which are at only 1 'level' of cover (or at 2 levels, not sure where the boundary lies). So being just out of LOS is not enough to avoid trouble with helo's. It is NOT a 'can fire at anything in range' thing though. The best thing is to set up a map with lot's of elevation levels and other cover. Set some radar guided AA units on one side and fly helo's with the other and see where you can and can't be fired at. That should give you a good idea of where there's cover or not and how much you need. Also note that sometimes when something appears to be a clear at ground level it can have an elevation (see top info bar) of up to 5 feet without a clear visual indication on the map itself. One foot more or less can make the difference on being seen or not.

It would seem that radar guided AAA has this capacity as much as radar guided sams do. I'm not sure if and to what degree that's unrealistic.
