OOB of the Soviet 13 mech Corps Nov 1942
Gentlemen, Im in the process of constucting a scenario depicting the 29 Mot div attack against the Russian 13 Mech Corps, Nov 21, 1942, but cannot find a unit organization for the 13 Mech. Nafziger, Glantz, Beevor et al do not break it down. Anyone out there have a reference? Thanx, Eric at [email protected]

Is this scenario going to be historical? Where was that?

Corps is about 3 divisions... Maybe you meant 13th Mechanized Brigade? I've got its organization. Let me know

RE: OOB of the Soviet 13 mech Corps Nov 1942
Hi Eric,
I've sent you an email yesterday and found some additional info:

"The 13th Mechanized Corps is an oddball in the Soviet Army. 13th Tank Corps had been so shot up that most of its tank brigades were removed in September-October 1942, and when Mechanized Brigades were substituted at the beginning of November, it should have been redesignated as a Mechanized Corps with a new number, as had happened to other tank corps in similar situations. Instead, the corps retained the number '13' and even the Soviet sources get confused on what to call it: a tank corps or a mechanized corps. It had the subordinate units of a mechanized corps when it went into battle in late November and December 1942. It fought as a mechanized corps with 57th, 51st and 2nd Guards Armies during December in the mobile battles against German panzers south of Stalingrad, and in recognition of its actions there on 9 January 1943 the 13th Mechanized Corps was redesignated as the 4th Guards Mechanized Corps."

Subordinate units as of 1 November 1942 were:

17th Mechanized Brigade
61st Mechanized Brigade
62nd Mechanized Brigade
13th Tank Brigade
565th Antitank Regiment (20 45mm guns)
398th Antiaircraft Regiment (16 37mm guns)
214th Sapper Battalion

Dmitry: The battle occurred south of Stalingrad on the 21 of Nov, 1942. The 29 Mot Div was attacking the flank of the southern pincer of Operation Uranus. The 57 Soviet Army broke thru the Rommanians guarding the southern flank of the 6th Army & the 13 Mech Corps drove on thru. 29 Mot Div was sent to intercept this attack was doing a pretty good job of beating up the 13 Mech Corps before being called off by 4 PzArmy. As you can see by the thread below, the 13 was a hybrid formation not really matching any of the many Mech Corp variants Ive found. Thanx for your input, Eric
