2nd Hungarian Army

Story of the 2nd Hungarian Army is rather dramatic one. Pride of Royal Hungarian Army, it advanced along the Germans in their late gains during Operation Barbarossa in 1941. In 1942, 2nd Hungarian made itself famous during valiant fights around the Don river in the south. As result, it advanced as flank guard security of the German 6th Army commanded by general von Paulus. Hungarians were targeted by first stage of Soviet Operation Little Saturn, as a southern pincer movement, that also struck Romanians. Underprepared for harsh winter and suffering from attrition, underequipped for a battle against future world power, 2nd Hungarian Army did not broke – it held, but then cracked open after Soviet tanks drove through them. After a month, 2nd Army lost 60% of personel, literally dozens of thousands of troops, as well as even 90% of heavy gear. The size of defeat was stunning for Hungarian public opinion and as result Hungarians successfully demanded on the Germans the need of nearly complete withdrawal of hungarian forces back to the homeland. Here, the 2nd remained forgotten in military structures, while smaller (though better equipped) Hungarian Army was being rebuilt. The reformation of 2nd Army appeared as an idea back in early 1944, when Szabolcs II Plan was introducedas an attempt to modernize the armed forces since Soviet threat was looking on the horizon. Szabolcs II Plan was never fully completed though. With Romanian about-face in August 1944, 2nd Hungarian Army was immediately reactivated and attached with units of various quality coming mostly from 1st Army that manned the safer Arpad Line. The 2nd Army was expected to execute a limited offensive before Allied armies will shift through Romania, particularly because in such a case Hungarian Transilvania will be in direct threat and Hungary proper – right afterwards.

Note: some thoughts on Hungarian names and reading, which is easy, but confusing at first. S = Sh (like in „Sharp”), Sz = s, cs = tsch (like in „Czech”), zs = g (but like in Gillete brand). Hungarians – similarily to Germans – build advanced words via connecting of several words describing one particular, eg. dreadful Panceloshadosztaly be: Pancel (armour), -os (posesive, so Pancelos is armoured), then hadosztaly mean simply a division (Had for general word for army, -osz again as posesive, taly means literally bowl, but it is also a measurement unit, like a bunch of something). So in fact it is pancel-os-had-osz-taly, read with English fonetics as several words: „pantzel-osh-had-os-tally”, literally the „armoured bunch of men”.

II. HADTEST
2nd Corps

The 2nd Corps was effectively the only serious fighting unit of the 2nd Hungarian Army. Formed together with the Army itself, it was made of four divisions – what is noticeable, without dedicated corps units – and tasked with securing the Turda area and as result, the entire Aranyos Line.

2nd Hungarian Armoured Division

The 2nd Armoured was created in late 1941 and was too late for Barbarossa. It was not in combat near the Don in 1942 (where the 1st Armoured was fighting) and instead it served as training cadre for general armoured forces of Hungary. As the hungarian production speeded up, there were enough vehicles to arm both armoured divisions. By half of the 1944, 2nd was more ready to fight than the 1st, still healing up after taking part in Bagration mauling. When Romanians betrayed and 2nd Army was activated, 2nd Armoured was put on high alert and imediately attached to it as main offensive punch. If fought till the end – during Debrecen, Hungarian Plain and Budapest, with elements going as far as March 1945.

In peacetime originally acting as mobilizing brigade, it was disbanded and reformed several times. It was again formed in late 1943 and was considered one of the best divisions, formed from many war veterans and subjected fully to Szabolcs II Plan. It served as main infantry force of the II Corps and lead the initial attack, as well as most of later dramatic defence.

7th Hungarian Field Replacement Division

Field Replacement division – or Tartalek – is en euphemism on the word „reserve”. In fact, this division was designed as late war training and reserve unit, in order to provide skilled personel for proper gyalog divisions. But as soon as it became clear that Hungary will need more line divisions to face the Reds, all the Tartaleks were put on the frontline. They mostly consisted of lower quality, undertrained conscripts and had less heavy equipment, with some coming from few captured stocks.

1st Field Replacement Mountain Brigade

These brigades (1st and 2nd) were not that much of a replacement, but rather a core for reforming mountain division and served as training cadres for this division. But 2nd Tartalekhegyidandar was activated in alte August and prepared to come in help the 2nd Army as the attack at Turda was clearly taking a bad turn. It arrived as reinforcements in good moment, helping to stabilise the worsening situation. The price was heavy however, casualties mounted and 2nd Mountain Reserve was disbanded in November 1944 and its members served as reserves for the 1st Mountain Brigade.

ARANYOS-VONAL HATATORVAR
Aranyos Line Szekler Border Guard Units

This „formation” encompasses static border guard defensive positions erected by the Hungarians on the border with Romania from 1941 onwards. Each such „fortress” was manned by roughly a 200-man comapny strength and it was supplemented with bunkers with overlapping fire. Comparatively, one völgyzár (thats the name of defensive sector) manned by such company was the territorial equivalent of entire french fortress division on the Maginot Line. This however applies mostly to the Arpad Line. The supportive Aranyos Line was constucted hastily and was much weaker underbelly near the Arpad Line itself. Still, its positions greatly supported the Hungarians in later stages of the fight at Turda. Arpad and Aranyos Lines remain the most effective field fortifications of World War 2, surpassing even the effectiveness of the Mannerheim Line in Finland, with 543 dead Russian attackers for a each single Hungarian border guardsman.
NOTE: Special rules apply to the units of Volgyzars. They are static and can never advance along the main force. Regardless of any outcome, they can never be bombed by bombers or artillery or suffer any negative effects from outer „elements” in the campaign. They always fight in defence mode with additional 200pts of fortifications. If this unit looses a battle it takes part in, it is destroyed. However, as long as Volgyzar is in combat, minor victory for the attacked is considered a draw, thus the front line is not moved.
