RE: TD's Vs Tanks
Surely the whole point of a TD is to take out the enemies armour, not to provide support for infantry.
Apart for a couple of exceptions, (the Jagdpanther being 1), most TD's are thinly armoured as they are meant to attack from ambush. If they go head to head with almost any tank they'll come off the worst.
Allied TD's have an open turret, but it is a turret; meaning that if they are wrongfooted they can react a damn sight quicker than German TD's. German TD's don't have turrets but either have a smaller profile making them harder to spot, or better armour, (thicker and sloped), which increases their survivability, but are hugely unwieldy, (I've just taken out Arch Enemy's Jagdpanther with a Wasp because the thing couldn't move quick enough).
Point for point TD's tend to be cheaper than Tanks but tanks are a more rounded, and therefore useful weapon, so it depends on what you think you are facing, and also who you are playing.
American
5 x M10's @ 102 each = 510 points. That would give you 2 x M4A3 (75)w+ Sherman @ 172 each, and 1 x M4A3 (76)w Sherman @ 166 = 510 points
German
5 x Hetzer (JPz 38t) @ 83 points = 415. That would give you 2 x Panzer IVH @ 118 each, and 1 x Tiger (Pz VIE late) @ 178 = 414 points
