Someone must have made a mistake. Minnows are being issued the latest and greatest in tank weaponry


The full out attack form the Allies never materialized. Instead it was Colonel Fubar's chance for some payback. The German units were perfectly placed. They had some losses in the opening rounds of the battle moving into place and getting smoked from long distances across the river. But the Allies were much closer now, some had already crossed the bridge and were hiding in the valley near Zolldorf.

The northern OP had mistakenly reported Allied heavies. They were wrong. They were British Achilles who escaped back over to the Allied side of the bridge fearing a decisive showdown. Instead a platoon of ppanzergrenadiers got the advanced Allied scouting party to surrender by sheer numbers. Two companies of Volksgrenadiers all charged out of the forest and took an objective unopposed there. Now the Germans could at least spot with some accuracy.

The Sherman/Fireflys at Zolldorf appeared over a ridge and mowed down the panzergreandiers and one MG platoon 250yds away. But that left them vulnerable. Panzer IV's appeared from behind the tree line and sent 5 of them ablaze.

This was still anybody's fight. It is more of a game hide and seek and losses are almost even.....

Final outcome......major Axis victory

Oberst Barron Von Brisco's radio reports his men are facing a fanatical enemy led by General Phil Nemesis himself. Oberst has faced this man many times, and knows him to be an aggressive leader. "He will attack us without mercy. He will show is no quarter."

The Germans take the small village in the southern sector, but advance no further. They seek refuge from the brutal artillery barrages.

The main breakthrough comes in the northern sector. The lay of the land allows the long range of the German tanks to engage the Allies from the safety of the entrenched positions.

The Americans send wave upon wave of half tracks and tanks in a manner not seen on the western front. "The men are restless, sir. Phil Nemesis is know as an aggressive general."

In the end the objective of St. Vith remained in the Allied hands, yet the cost of lost tanks and half tracks was too much for the crafty American.

3km East of St Vith, Somewhere in the Ardennes

Axis Turn 8

American artillery yet again shoot blindly, having little impact in the mud.
With no spotters left to speak of, the Americans move forward in the north in their ubiquitous jeeps and halftracks to spot on the advancing Germans. Around St Vith troops are seen scurrying for cover under the guns of the panthers at Wallerode, a bold Sherman Jumbo moves towards the St Vith Wald and is fired on with no effect. In the south the remnants of the American scouts in the St Vith Wald pray for a speedy capture.

In the north Lemnitz's landsers continue their advance raking a 57mm Anti-tank gun out of existance, whilst the Panthers and newly arrived Jadgpanzer IV's deal with the irritating jeep spotters in the usual manner. The Panthers in Wallerode hold their position as they drive an Engineer trying to blow up the bridge to the north of St Vith back under cover with the loss of a third of their number.

Advancing up the road from Eiterbuch an MG platoon runs headfirst into an American ambush position off to the side of the road near the blown bridge. They disrupt the defending MG section with the assistance of a Bicycle platoon before Engineers doubletime up the road and overrun the defenders capturing a 3 inch cannon and driving the MG section into the open where they are casually dispatched by other landsers cramming the road.

The remains of the American scouts in the St Vith Wald a mortar section and a battered MG section are wiped out in quick sucession by Stoesser's advancing troops, whilst Fichtner's troops probe forward onto the heights overlooking the valley with some trepidation, as this area seems to have been a focal point for American artillery.

There has been little to report in this engagement as it has been very slow progress, what follows is a very brief report of the battle.

The German Commander decided to dig in with his infantry opposite the central Allied bridges controlled by the Americans and British and backed up the Infantry with hidden Tigers.
At the same time as reinforcements arrived in small packets, he slowly built up his forces on the Allied side of the river at both the northern and southern bridges. These forces also dug in on the Allied side of the river and prepared to defend the ground gained. They were once again being covered with heavy armour from the opposite bank of the river.
This resulted in stalemate of a kind with the Allied commander mounting various probing attacks, these were met and repulsed at every instance.
Slowly the Allies were being bleed to death in these futile attacks. The Allied commander saw some of his Tank destroyers shot to bits in one of these attacks. Being a sensible and honourable man, decided there was no way to achieve any breakthrough or victory at this point of the river.
He therefore conceded the victory to the Axis.
