Display: Rotate Map
Bottom up or top down?
This is freaking me out a little. I've started a meeting engagement
scenario as the side to the north or top of the map and played a turn quite happily moving my units south towards the combat zone.
Once battle is engaged the thought struck me that I prefer to defend if I'm the northern force or attack from the south upwards if I'm the aggressive force.
I'm sure I've played north/south meeting engagements before and never thought about this. Now I have I can't decide how to look at the game.
Just wondered if anyone else has a preference? It could be a human brain thing or it could be just me. Do you prefer to attack going upwards on the map?
Probably just me having a weird moment - or maybe the rest of you rotate the map when you attack or defend? East/west we have no choice but if we did I would attack from the west and defend to the east.
My posts are getting weirder as I get older.

RE: Display: Rotate Map
Chris
It is great to see that this is not just only me. I simply cannot play a scenario where I am moving the units towards me. I always have to rotate the map. It just seems wrong moving them into my lap, where I am sitting at the PC. I like to be on the same side as my attacking or defending troops as if the screen extends from the base of the monitor into my room.
Very sad

Same here -I like to push my troops, not pull them -the antithesis of leadership, I understand

RE: Display: Rotate Map
I can't play any scenarios where the north is not the top of the map. I have no problems attacking, defending from any direction as long as the north is the top of the map :)

I always play with my forces at my lap, moving up the screen, then again, I don't win too many !

I always prefer to defend in the South.
My great-great-grandfather told stories of the northern invaders during the War of Northern Aggression.;)

RE: Display: Rotate Map
These games are natural descendants of games like Chess, would it ever occur to you to play a game of Chess from left to right, or where you didn't sit "behind" your pieces and move them "up" toward the enemy king?
I'm an old paper (or "manual") game grognard, I can tell you the first order of business was always to arrange for players to sit across the table from their foes, "behind" their units. Then we'd set up our little nests, with rules, offboard displays and player aids to hand, perhaps a little drinky-doodle or a snack; and once this was done these positions were inviolable. To this day I'm out of my element if I can't rotate the map to conform to this pavlovian expectation.....
