Matrix / Talonsoft CS / Conflict and status
:soap:
Having had discussions with a few guys and reading some messages on the blitz, I'm gonna be controversial and make a few comments re Matrix\Talonsoft CS.

'How could you tell which are compatible with the Talon Soft games if all are in the same catagories? Me has new units and oobs, correct? Those of us with only the Talonsoft version do not want to sift through a bunch scenarios just to find one that plays on the old version.'
- This never got a response, 'tho I felt it was a valid point?

'Why take the risk. Why not support the development being done on the Matrix version and buy it.'
- Maybe some of us do not have the finances to be able to purchase the Matrix version. I for one still haven't bought the Pb discs due to financial problems. I have Talonsoft and enjoy playing them so don't get caught up in the euphoria and let us guys slip into the underworld! We are still part of the Blitz and our comments are equally important.

'We'll prolly have to consider putting a safeguard step into the process in the future, where scenarios aren't added instantly until approved by the ladder custodian, or make it so only custodians can make additions/changes, to get some cooks out of the kitchen..'
- Now there is talk of only allowing custodians to upload\update\change scenarios in the data base. They never even showed me courtesy by replying to any of the e-mails I sent about **** ?

Why not have a separate ladder just for Matrix players? Why do I have to sort through all their posts, and weed out their scenarios from the Talonsoft stuff?

Just a few comments and responses to bear in mind?

I appreciate the efforts put into the matrix edition and in no way am slighting those people or their efforts.
Just trying to illustrate that there may be a few in the blitz who feel the're becoming second citizens?

RE: Matrix / Talonsoft CS / Conflict and status
Peter,

Like with all upgrades, support for older versions will gradually fade. It's the same with old operating systems like MS DOS or Windows 95 and it will be the same with Talonsoft CS. Everyone is eager to get the new features in the new version and the designers are eager to upgrade their scenarios. Some of us have been waiting for years for this.
However I do think the Talonsoft disks will be around for a while as most players that had them will keep them .

At the same time I think it would be wise for the club to let the ME become the standard as that is a game that is supported by a developer.

I don't see any benefits in having a separate Matrix Ladder as most members will eventually get ME especially since the price it is sold for is more than fair.

Hi Huib,

thanks for the response.
I appreciate what you say and am sure everyone will buy the Matrix eventually, like I said, some guys may not be in a position to. Maybe I'm a minority with this regard, lol!
I guess what I'm trying to say is, that if there are a fair number like me, who only play the CS discs, then maybe that warrants an interim period where the scenarios are listed seperately?
If no-one else posts to this, supporting my comments, then I bow in acceptance and understand I'm the only poor ba****d in here, lol!
regards
Peter
cheers

I'm with Glint, I only have the Talonsoft version and I am starting to feel like a second-class citizen.

RE: Matrix / Talonsoft CS / Conflict and status
As far as I know Jason has replied and fixed talonsoft/matrix compatibility issues, I do believe the solution is the Talonsoft user has to begin the scenario.

In regards to sorting thru the DB for scenarios to play, matrix scenarios are hopefully going to be designated by a comment in their description box. this remains to be seen as effective or bust.
As we know PB1 Scenarios are marked with a **, this works fine so far I am assuming. so perhaps the matrix ones can also be adopted to the ** listing as the PB scenarios are all included in matrix version anyways.

Who did you write to concerning your questions and suggestions? I try to reply to everyone who writes me since I am currently the only senior staff person residing at the club for the time being. Jim is in Iraq, Paul has went AWOL, I might not get back to you for a few days but I do try.

No separate ladder is in the foreseeable future, matrix is a continuance of TS, albeit a supported version as well. I understand financial issues being a stumbling block, but that is no reason to feel like a second hander here, we all are the same group, just some of us have a newer version to tinker with.
The only thing that is required of TS users is a bit more time to review their scenarios choices in the DB, prior to a game session, to ensure it's a TS version.

the custodians inputting scenario data is simply a safe guard until we can sort out the DB in the near future. it is a mess right now with multiples and duplicates everywhere. Our priority however is getting the membership DB sorted properly it is in worse shape due tho the forums having a separate DB and users from 1 are not sharing the same ID numbers from the other. thus when a user is booted from bootcamp for not playing, his forum ID remains unless we go and manually remove it, certainly a headache when time is of essence.

the scenario adding is still open to all it's just caution is advised to NOT make a matrix listing OR use the sub game listings, simply use EF2 WF or RS and this makes things far more easier to sort later when we have the time to revamp the area.

RE: Matrix / Talonsoft CS / Conflict and status
Thanks for the full explanation of things, Red.
My original comments were from others, with their permission.
I felt in agreement with them to various degrees and volunteered to stick my neck out and bring up the debate.
Each individual is different and I felt, if they did not want to create a fuss, then I would be happy to voice the comments I have had made to me, hopefully in a constructive and respectful manner!
I understand the excitement re Matrix and would love to get hold of it and probably will shortly, I guess my main concern is that, as I said, the Talonsoft players aren't getting heard enough?
I respect the efforts put in by the folk on the Blitz and know it ain't easy by any stretch of the imagination, so hats off to you all.
I just thought this would give people with comments to make, a chance to have their say, I am just opening the debate for them.
regards
Peter

My scenarios will be available in all versions at least for quite a bit longer.

Well, thanks for your input and info, guys!
Much appreciated.
It looks like myself and Wolf 'at the door' man are the only guys with issues about this?
I appreciate your listening to my views and the constructive discussion, thanks.
I think I'll have a think about another debate to keep the interest going in the Blitz, lol!
:)

Peter
