LMG : a wasting of money
Hi,

I just want to have your opinion about those LMG. From my experience, I can't remember a game where this weapon has been efficient.
It is slow, weak.
Then, it kills nothing. It has a small range and a light fire power (i never saw a LMG's casualty in all my CMAK career).
Recently, i managed to place very quicly two LMG units in a church, made them hidden and entrenched before the enemy even began to walk (thanks halftracks).
When my opponent's soldiers arrived in the village, the LMG shot on them by surprise. After 35 seconds, my both units were dead !!!!!!
So, what else ? if a unit is in the best protection (church), is very well hidden and entrenched, shots on the enemy by surprise and dispite these parameters, dies so quickly, i just claim it :
LMG are sucking units. there are only a wasting of money.
If you have positive experience with these weapons, just tell us.

Cheers.
Hubert

Uses for LMG units:

1) eyes on the flank
2) squad ambush (only fire at PB range and realize that any other enemy squads in vicinity will most likely kill it, as only has two men)
3) pinning from medium range (2-300m) for troops in open. never fire at troops in cover.
4) only spend when have leftover points
5) when used in unison with troops that do not have LMG support within unit (IE. Italian rifle platoons should be bolstered with 2-3 LMG's for long range pinning and suppression; this works via the cluster effect as enemy units will focus on the full squads over LMG's even at range.

That's about it. I prefer spending leftover points on TH units as they make good flank eyes, can ambush and wipe out a whole squad at PB with MG's and take out AFV's. Much better to spend the extra 4 points for TH (but it depends).

Cheers!

Jaws you might want to have a look through this thread on the tactics forum, a lot of good info there:

Personally I usually just buy them if I have a few points left over and not enough to get anything else. If I have one I'll use it as a scout on a flank, or if I've decided not to contest one of the flags I'll send the LMG there just in case my opponent has decided not to go for it either.

I'd rather have one good sniper than three LMGs for the same price...

RE: LMG : a wasting of money
Me i use LMGs either to create an artificial troop concetration in the attack
sending 5-6 in the open so my opponent will start spending his artillery thinking that he got one or more Plts in the open or he will expose some of his MGs.
Given the fact that a conscript LMG is worth 5 points, with 30 points i can either force my opponent to spend some valuable arty or if not my LMG will move forward and gain some valuable intel.
In defence i am buying and place them in front of the Main line of defence in order to slow down the opponent (gain some turns)and to make him waste some of his ammo(occasionally they are also killing some infantry :})
In some cases those cheap LMGs have been proved usefull.

As most part of you do, I used to buy those units only with the few money left. But as Derkuenstler said, i think it is probably preferable to buy a sniper or a german anti-tank team than those poor units with this leftovers.

cheers.

True that in a H2H comparison a sniper or a TH could be of more use
but in some cases you can take something usefull out of those units.

Their ~30FP is ok in open terrain, especially for moving units. This 30FP works better if you add it to the firepower of another squad. But it's hardly enough to pin one squad in scattered trees, even with sustained fire.

In a recent game I faced 6-men Romanian LMG squads, and they caused me a lot of trouble.

RE: LMG : a wasting of money
I don't worry about whether they kill many enemy soldiers or not.. :-)
I set them up in forward "trigger wire" defensive positions.
Covering, or scouting my flanks when advancing.
An another god tactic is to hurry up with a few of them to take over a flag, in a meeting engagement. Ambush enemy infantry as it approaches same flag in the open and absorb enemy artillery barrage, as it is dropped to soften up same position, for a counterattack by enemy infantry. (believe me, they survive an enemy artillery barrage, lot better than fool compliment infantry squads do.. :-)

My infantry squads are waiting a mere 150 to 200 yards behind, to advance into flag position, immediately after enemy barrage is lifted, etc..
So basically, they are good for screening, scouting and artillery fodder.. :-)
