What tanks are in these pics?
Hi Guys

Old member, been inactive for a while due to some family stuff that is only now getting towards resolved. I was one of raz_atoths first opponents and it's good to see such a nice guy is now one of the mods, nice to see others seen his good qualities.

Ok, onto the reason for the post. I was down in dorset to see Monkey World, ape rescue centre, with my fiancee and was surprised to see we were only a little way away from Bovington Tank museum. The following day we decided to go and visit the museum and found it was closed for renovations, bugger. Still, there was a couple of tanks parked outside still on display and we had a look at them. I don't recognise either of them.

I thought about it and thought the best bunch of military geeks i could ask what these were was the good folk at the blitz. Took a pic of both on the mobile so forgive the poor quality. We had been asked to leave and folk were watching so couldn't get great shots. If anyone is wanting scale the guy in the shot is me, i'm five foot ten and weigh around fifteen stone.

Also saw this mobile arty piece, just in case anyone wants a look :)

RE: What tanks are in these pics?
The first one is (bit hard to make out) the early model Churchill with a 2pdr in the turret and a 3 inch howitzer in the hull.

The other two I'm not sure....

2nd one, just a guess, but a fake tank (D-Day/Alamein etc)?

RE: What tanks are in these pics?
The bottom one looks like a prototype for a large SP gun on a Centurion chassis... 4 inch gun?

Middle one???.... also looks a bit like a Centurion chassis... the turret?... no idea... looks like a design mock-up.

RE: What tanks are in these pics?
The first pic tank looks like a Churchill Mk. I
That one mounted a 40mm gun
It could be the Mk. IV which mounted a 57mm gun
It is not the Mk. VII which had a 75mm gun..

Second pic does look like a mock-up..

Last one, have no idea. It is not a WWII tank design, though.. :-)

Cheers guys

I had thought the first one looked like a chuchill but i didn't know any of them got built with a hull gun. The 2nd one, no idea, looked heavily sloped armour just a shame we weren't able to hang about and get some decent shots.

RE: What tanks are in these pics?
I think the second one must be a pilot model of the Centurion (A41)

Hi Andre,

You sure that one mounts a 183mm gun. The barrel diameter don't appear to be that large..
But I'll take your word for it.. :-)
Although, it does appear to be a post WWII self propelled artillery piece.
