If you are like me and find the PING sound of arty shrapnel bouncing off your tanks totally annoying, and you turn your speakers off during the arty phase so you don't have to listen to it, then I have a fix for you.
Go into your spww2 and spmbt data/sound folders and change sound 81 to NULL.
So in spww2 it will be "NULL.WAV" and for MBT it will be "NULL.WAV" and also change the MP3 to "NULL.MP3".
No more stupid PING that slows the arty phase down. There is also a ping sound at slot 22 and maybe 82, but I think they have to do with bounces on bunkers so I have not changed them yet.
Any problems let me know.

I think the game engine often picks from two or three of the three ricochet sounds at random (depending on the type of ordinance/target that was hit; though this may not be true for HE shrapnel. But even if HE shrapnel only uses 81.wav, there are still other ordinance hits/damage that also use 81.wav.
If it's only the actual sound you find annoying, you could replace it.
In the next release of my SPWW2/MBT sound mod, 'Cross Sounds 0.9' I replace all three ricochet sounds. I designed them specifically to make them the least annoying possible.
In case you want to listen to them or try them out, I'll attach them as a zip file. Just unzip and click on them to listen. Paste the three WAV files into your Sounds folder if you want them in the game.
I would rather have no sound for another event then hear that stupid ping every time a bullet is fired or a round lands. The best part is when it hits several vehicles at once and you hear PING, PING, PING. Enough to make you slit your throat.

If you get that crazy laser/pinball (NULL) sound, you could install a holding file with a silent sound. You may still get a slight delay when shrapnel hits a AFV, but there will be no sound.
Thanks. Yes I got that and I was about to create one myself and install it. I will check out your ping sound first, maybe it is more bearable then shrapnels. If not then I will go with the silent.
Gee, I thought a NULL sound would be NO sound. How stupid of me to not realize that NULL to shrapnel is a sound.

Yep, all it does is slow down game play. And when you have tons of arty landing which takes long enough as it is, any more delay is unbearable. Our game is prime example and is why I turned fast arty on.
I created my own null sounds that are .5sec long, so they are very fast indeed. Nice and quite and I can live with the bullets not going "ping" off my tank.

Thanks Cross. I was getting very tired of listening to that ricochet sound. These sounds sure do make the game easier to listen to!
