Another favorite is In Harm's Way. Great, great Navy movie, and more major Hollywood stars in one movie than anything except maybe The Longest Day.

John Wayne
Kirk Douglas
Burgess Meredith
Dana Andrews
Henry Fonda
Carol O'Conner
Slim Pickens
Larry Hagman
a grown up Brandon de Wilde (he was the little kid in "Shane")
George Kennedy
Patricia Neal

Come And See

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Come_and_See

A Russian film about a kid in the partisans...

It's not a "fun" film, but by gum, I think some of its scenes will stay in my head forever...

Twelve O'Clock High, best movie I know for demonstrating how to take decisive command of a unit-

RE: Favorite war movie?
Hi,

"Stalingrad" and "Cross of Iron" are the best i think.

But i also have a thought for "the dirty dozen" and "the great escape".

All previous flicks stand high in my own opinion. Great stuff...all!

But I add a few other considerations:

Gettysburg
Zulu
Joyeux Noel

Those are earlier wars; if I pick WW2 flicks only, I'd go with.....

Das Boot
Enemy at the Gates

(I also like Cross of Iron, but the book is much better than the movie! Read it decades ago....) ;)

RE: Favorite war movie?
There are some excellent BW 1950's movies that our US friends may not have seen, Cruel Sea and Ice Cold in Alex are very well made despite the lack of special effects.

The first 20 mins of Saving Private Ryan are hard to beat although i do not rate the film as a whole and BOB is excellent although not a "film" as such.

Das Boot has to be the best film for trying to make you understand how terrifying it must have been in a sub in any war.

I am glad no one said U571 as that film was a bit of an insult to the true story of the capture of the Enigma machine by the Royal Navy.

RE: Favorite war movie?
I must go with most of you guys. My old time favorite, "Cross Of Iron."
If I'm alowed to pick second and third.. :-)
Those would be Enemy At The Gates and Saving Private Ryon.

Have Winter War and Das Boot also.
Oh yeah, one more.. Stalingrad.
This one is from the same produser that did "Das Boot."
