Question on aircraft

RE: Question on aircraft
I have collided with armour aircraft in fight against seabolt.
As I have been disappointed, when made "hit" in Apache, it has appeared harmless (shot from 12,7-mm MG = Mi-8). Eek

It is necessary to make "damage" (to punch armour).

Therefore armour aircraft can return again to fight even if in them air defence has got, but has not made damage. :smoke:

Vesku Wrote:Can't remember an IL-2 ever been damaged by light arms

I want to recall having lost one Il-2 to 7.92mm fire, but I may be misremembering. Certainly I have lost *scores* of armor 2 attack helicopters to AK-47 fire, but that's a different story. Helicopters seem to have a high "armor bypassed for this hit" chance. Planes seem to have a low chance of same.

Yes, your penetration 1 HMG usually, but far from always, bounces off an armor 2 copter or plane, and a bounce does nothing to deter the aircraft. I don't think that they even suffer suppression.

RE: Question on aircraft
Damage to an aircraft is not just any old bullet hole, as soon as an aircraft gets a point of damage it means it has suffered some degree of significant damage. A pilot can't know what exactly is wrong, all he feels is that something is wrong with his plane, it doesn't behave the way it should. Conclusion for the pilot, it's damaged and better get back to base to have it checked out before I crash!
For lightly damaged aircraft it means it probably could have stayed and done a few more runs but the point is that pilot doesn't know this.

Small arms shouldn't fire at aircraft as far as I know. They did so in the past but I think it was taken out quite a while ago (even before the Windows version came out I think). The problem there is that even a 1% chance of hitting and damaging an unarmored aircraft with small arms is still way too high.

Choppers is another thing, if at low altitude and moving slow they're an excellent target. When low and fast they're still a viable target but hitting them gets difficult.
Armor for choppers is fuselage armor btw, the rotor sections tends to be armor value 0. That's why armored choppers get damaged by low calibre weapons.

By small arms I mean 7.x2mm AAMGs on non-AA vehicles. You fly over a U.S. mech infantry column, even the cooks and clerks light you up ...

I didn't know that ref the hexes between shoots! U so smart

I had a few SS sqds shoot at my spotter plane yesterday.

(I gotta lay off the tequila ...)

Ahh, yes spotter planes, there's them too. I wasn't sure if those could still be shot down with small arms fire. At least they don't get fired at easily as it used to be.
A simple way to roll up infantry defenders was to fly a spotter close to them, everyone opened up and you knew exactly where all the defenders were. Well spotted! Get those guys a posthumous medal! :whis:

Maybe the high quality of the troops played a role in your battle as I haven't seen it happen in quite some time.

RE: Question on aircraft
Hello Chris,

Yeah.. Sturmoviks were called 'Iron Ivans' for good reason.. German Pilots had a bugger of a time bringing them down.. the entire fuselage and wing center sections were covered in armor plate.. only reliable way to bring one down was to clobber the oil cooler that hung under the fuselage.. try that when they would fly down in the weeds..

anyway.. in game turns.. I have played against plenty of Stumovic's and it seems that anything less than a 40mm gun has little chance of actually bringing one down.. when I have them, i'll turn off the heavy ordinance a for a couple of sorties so they can get the picture over the battle.. then given the correct opportunity turn on all the guns and send over the whole bunch..

Cheers! - Greybeard

RE: Question on aircraft
But 1 lucky point of damage will still make him bugger off home, whereas the heavy armour will prevent him from being shot down.
