Need a paint program but can't afford one?

Need a paint program but can't afford one?
If you need a paint program like Corel Paint Shop, but can not afford the $100 price tag, you can get a free program that is ranked #19 in top software at getpaint.net.

This program does almost as much as Paint Shop but is totally free which is amazing. There are regular updates to it too.

Years ago I tried a trial of PSP and could not figure it out. After messing about with MS Paint and Irfanview, I tried Paint.Net and found it to be pretty good once you get the hang of things.
The Gimp, also freeware gets a lot of bad comments about the UI, but after using Paint.Net, Gimp wasn't so bad as it seemed to use similar commands.

From first looks good call for once a paint programe with a relativly simple interface which has always been my beef. Never undertood why its such a problem the ancient Amiga program DPaint was dead simple to use & did much more than Paint & this looks like it has an interface similar to whatever the Amigas picture manipulation program was called, I forget it was so long ago. So much for progress finally caught up with the 70s just added a couple of bells & whistles along the way.

If you read the history the program, paint.net, was designed by college students as a project but even though they have graduated they continue to develop it.

When I started modding Combat Mission and SP, all you needed was a bmp editor. Times change and soon I needed png and transparent backgrounds and such. That's when I got into Paint.net. Downside for some people is having to have .net installed as well. Not a problem for me as newer games require it anyway.

I'm also a fan of paint.net and have used it for many years. I installed it on all my boys computers and they love it and use it all the time.

There are a lot of good plugins available for paint.net. For SP I recommend the HexGrid and GridMaker plugins.
I'll attach them to this post. Just unzip, and put the two files in your Paint.Net 'Effects' Folder.
Then you can load a map or aerial photo, and draw square or hexagon grids (of any size) over the image. Using Effects, Render... Which is useful for mapmaking.

Cheers Cross thats a pretty nifty plug in.
I have a question as was thinking of downloading some modified icons for Halftracks etc to have a look & you mentioned have installed.
When a new patch comes out does it overwrite them? If you have backups of any you think are particulary good or the links to could you post please.

Hi Imp,

Custom icons will only be overwritten in a patch if the patch contains updates/changes to that particular icon. So it's unlikely but possible, and patches are only once a year.

I've only customized about a half dozen icons, adding camouflage and in one case the Allied circle and star (for aerial identification). But there's plenty of excellent Icons made by others. I'll see if I can dig up some links.

http://photofiltre.en.softonic.com/

"Photofiltre is a relatively small application and, unlike Photoshop, will install and launch very quickly. The interface, loaded with all the features and options, can be confusing at first glance, but after a short time,, you should be comfortable with it. The right side is composed of the shape and drawing tools and an optimizable color palette. The top bar has all the essential image editing and modification options. Photofiltre sadly doesn’t let you customize the interface and choose your favorite tools......."

RE: Need a paint program but can't afford one?
Thanks Weasel and Cross!

I have many paint programs, but I like this one the best. Also, the plugins are updated at the site.
I'm working with some topo maps and this program has really helped me.

cheers
