c_Question Mark  Mortars Range
[Image: mortars.jpg]

The strength of a strike depends on range. Until 1250m it is ok, 17 to 15. But then it drops to 10 at 1500m and gradually to 5 at 2750m.

Question: what does this difference in firepower illustrate? I understand that AT shell or a bullet loses its power with increasing range. But what about mortars (and other indirect Arty)? Isn't it the same bomb coming from 1km or from 2km?

Any ideas?

RE: Mortars Range
I think you raise a very good point.
Is it perhaps referring to increasing inaccuracy at longer range, due to effects such as wind, normal dispersion etc/

RE: Mortars Range
I am not sure how the game in question handles "to hit" versus "to kill" data. From what you posted it does appear this game is adjusting for to hit probability with increased range by lowering the firepower thus giving the feel that less rounds fired will actually hit the target in a place to do damage.

Thank you for your answers, gents! Now it make sence.

The only dark spot in this case for me is still that dramatic change in "lowering the firepower" from 1250m to 1500m. Can't figure it out. :dunno:

Agreed.

I have never understood the drastic differences.

RE: Mortars Range
Is it possible that mortar units are equipped with multiple ammunition types that have different max ranges and HE charges? Heavier HE ammo for shorter ranges and lighter HE ammo for extended ranges?

E.G., Wikipedia (I know, I know) lists the M1 81mm US mortar as having:

M43A1 round, Weight 6.87 lb (either round weight or the HE charge), Range 3000m
M45 round, Weight 10.6 lb, Range 2000m
M56 round, Weight 15 lb, Range 1200m

So the dramatic drops might be different rounds and the steady drops are dispersion, flight time, drift, etc.

Mike

More info: Looked at the German 81mm mortar in Wiki and they supposedly used the same round with additional powder charges to increase range. So it would be interesting to see if the German mortar has a steadier drop off in effect than the US M1 mortar.
