On Foot Question
Is there any advantage or disadvantage to putting Engineers in "On Foot" status when they are clearing land mines or is it better to leave them with their vehicles?

Besides crossing water when using a ferry, what would be some examples of when it would be a good idea to put infantry type units into "On Foot" status?

Thanks

Motorized and mechanized units cannot enter certain terrain unless they are on foot. You may need to do this sometimes.

As well as crossing hexside rivers by going in to 'T' mode when on foot.

You give them back their vehicles by being stacked with its HQ (at the start of the next turn) -I imagine they both have to be undisrupted (but am not in a position to look that up).

RE: On Foot Question
Units on foot can be ferried across any river hexside by any engineer unit, by that i don't mean by the ferry's marked on the map that allow you to cross rivers, but by the boats each engineer unit is deemed to possess that allow movement across hexside rivers.

Full hex rivers can also be crossed by the engineers but they must have the "Has Boats" tag on the image.

In both cases units must be on foot to take advantage of the engineers ferry ability.

Read the engineer section of the rules for full details. ;)

No unless the mines are in a hex that a mech unit cannot enter.

RE: On Foot Question
put another way - when DEPLOYED on not in Travel mod - the units are on foot sort of. But there transport is available to load up and move.

The ON Foot status was designed so that MOt units could take action and move into places we Mot units can't go by leaving their trucks - in game terms parking the trucks at HQ instead of in the hex.

It begane necessary in the game for PzC#5 - Bulge when at teh start of the CG a the German have a PzGren unit that were ferryied ON FOOT over the Our River to hold the bridgehead. But we couldn't start them as MOT units because they could mount their trick and move off. And we couldn't have them in teh game as a FOOT unit because as soon as the bridge was built their trucks came across and they loaded up and moved off at MOT Speed again.

It is actually a rather elaborate way to handle the function. It isn't perfect but it works nicely here but certainly gives no advantage to Eng functions. Also - clearing mines is one factor at a time automatic each turn anyway.

RE: On Foot Question
Thanks guys for taking the time to explain things.

The "in game terms parking the trucks at HQ instead of in the hex" makes it alot easier to understand.

As for the game manual, I agree rereading it would be helpful. The manual is a wealth of information however, when just starting out and trying to learn the game system, it can be very overwhelming.

Thanks Again!

No problem, i think we can all remember when we felt overwhelmed as well when we started out! Big Grin

Don't try to read the whole manual gain, just read a section at a time and then leave it for a couple of days before reading another section.

RE: On Foot Question
I wouldn't mind seeing motorized units automatically enter on foot status when they deploy. The vulnerable trucks were kept out of the immediate battle area and often were used for other purposes after the infantry was delivered.

Panzergrenadier and mechanized units' vehicle mounted weapons systems (machineguns, mortars and cannon of various sorts) contributed to those units' fighting strength. Trucks were not used that way, except for a few unsuccessful experiments and we have armored cars for that.

As it is, allowing motorized units to deploy without going on foot blurs the distinction between these units and true mechanized units.
