Ladder stuff
So, I haven't played PBEM for a few years but I used to play Panzer & Modern Campaigns over at the Panzer Campaigns Club at wargame.ch. When you start a game are you fresh-meat for all the veteran predators out to improve their statistics or do you start with someone at your level at the bottom of the ladder or does it not matter or both or what? I have been suckered so many times I am a bit leery about jumping in again. I really don't want to get my chops busted by someone who has won 95% of their games. Yes, I did look. Hard to imagine someone is that good without something fishy going on. :whis:

Just curious.

RE: Ladder stuff
There is a knack to Panzer Campaigns and some guys have it down pretty good. I think PzC is in some way unrealistic because we players have way too much information, especially the accurate maps and location and strength of enemy units. With this myriad of information tactics is king and once the breakthrough is achieved, and a good player will break through, all hell is set loose. I don't encounter cheating. What I do encounter are guys who understand the system and who know how to make it work, and yes a newbie can feel very much like a lamb among wolves. Jonny :eek1:

PS. Why don't you try World War One Campaigns? There ain't no tanks there. :whis:

RE: Ladder stuff
Welcome aboard!

There are newbies flooding around all the way up to guys who help design and play test. If you are looking for opponents with in a certain skill level, all you have to do is advertise what you are looking for. If someone who responds doesn't "fit the bill", don't play them.

Good Luck!

RE: Ladder stuff
Indeed when i was a newbie it seemed that there was no way i could beat an experienced player, but over time my knowledge of the system and how to make it work to my advantage grew and soon i could compete with the best this ladder has to offer. :)

So stick with it, find an opponent at you skill level and have some fun!

Also read the sticky thread on the Opt rules and how they can alter the way a game plays. ;)

I don't think there are many real predators in the Blitz TOC community, and you'll learn more getting beat by an experienced player than beating a fellow newbie. Most players are happy to share general tips 'n tricks, in my experience. I'd say just pick what you want to play and find somebody else who wants to play it. So what if you lose? It's only pixels dying; no real blood, after all.

RE: Ladder stuff
Even if you are very unlucky and you get your fingers burnt, after you try a few guys out you will find someone who plays at your level (or as Sgt Jasper says maybe slightly better) and then you can game in confidence.

In the end we were all in your position at one time. Big Grin

RE: Ladder stuff
Given that there is no money at stake, it would take a rather pathetic personality to be a "predator" here. These games don't lend themselves (thankfully) to hyper-competitive play - solving strategic and tactical problems and learning history are the payoffs
