Chronicles of V Panzer Army

Chronicles of V Panzer Army
Generals,
I have finally played or almost played most of these from both sides and have found major errors in the OOB file for Americans. All the airborne and infantry divisions are from 1942 and are almost useless against the modern German armor and not all that good against infantry either. I guess my next project will be rewriting the entire OOB for the Allieed infantry to update to 1944 units. I reckon this will take me a fair amount of time to do and then redo the scenarios. My apologies for not picking this up sooner but I only noticed it when I commanded the famed 101st stand at Bastogne and to my surprise they were completed ineffective and overun by armor with very little infantry support. I have checked all the scenarios and they all have the same defect. To get a true read on victory levels I would suggest that only objective points be used when comparing victory levels. I will fix this as soon as I can and re-release the scenarios.

My apologies for the screw up but the OOB looked good on the drawing board. Like the guy said in the dirty dozen "They're pretty Colonel, but can they fight" answer is not very well in 1944 :-)

Von,

Good catch and one of my pet gripes since the system transformed with infantry quality. I am very glad you came forward with this issue!!!

The '42 USA rifle platoons are just not up to the task fighting in late '44.

If I can help you transform OOB's please don't fail to ask me!

Best always!

RE: Chronicles of V Panzer Army
Earl, you can update the OOBs also via opening them files in a text editor, and doing a global find-replace on the file.

If I recall correctly, the ORG file accompanying the scenario lists the platoon files without the P and leading zeros, so for an example German P01973 would be 1973. Then, if you would want to replace all Pz IVs with say Panthers you would just search for "1973" and replace them - one by one if necessary - with the proper unit number.

Then, once the ORG file is taken care, you would do the same for SCN.

Microsoft Word can be used as a text editor, to help in the work.

It should be quite easy, minutes-to-hours rather than days, if changing unit types is enough.

Of course, if you have complete and new OOBs you'd want to use, then you would have to use the Org editor first and then place the new units with Scn editor. That is a lot of work, that's why I thought I would post this.

Hope this helps?

I can have a look later today at home, or perhaps another member can continue how this would work.

cheers

Hi VE,

Thanks for letting us know, I just completed my first turn as Allies in Chronicles 1 and will now wait until you have updated the OOB's before I try again. I am looking forward to playing through the entire campaign.

Please keep us updated as to the availability of the updated OOB's.

Regarding files, here's a snippet from an *.ORG file:

B114204 685 7 303. Sturmgeschütz-Abteilung
P1305 686 7 303. Panzerabwehr-Abteilung HQ
P1406 687 7 Major Winnefeld
C104206 688 7 1. Panzer-Sturmgeschützkompanie
P1022 690 7 I. Zug
P1022 691 7 II. Zug
P1022 692 7 III. Zug
End
C104207 698 7 3. Sturmgeschützkompanie
P1023 703 6 I. Zug
P1023 704 6 II. Zug
End
End
End

EDIT: Blitz web page removes the leading white space. In reality these are nicely indented for your reading pleasure!

StuGs (P01022) and StuHs (P01023) are shown without a leading zero from German country code '01'.

Should I want to change the unit without the Org editor I would just replace the P1022 with let us say P1930 (P01930) for a Jagdpanzer IV.

Similarly, in *.SCN file, I would locate them as follows:

0 14 24 1631 364 4 8 2 100 4 0 0 3 3 3
0 14 25 1215 358 4 8 5 100 4 0 0 3 3 3
0 14 25 1022 696 4 4 3 100 7 0 0 3 3 3
0 15 24 1111 342 4 4 2 100 4 0 0 3 3 3
0 15 24 1832 345 4 2 3 100 4 0 0 3 3 3
0 16 10 1303 271 4 4 3 100 4 0 0 3 3 3
0 16 10 1408 272 4 2 3 100 4 0 0 3 3 3
0 16 11 1133 1011 4 4 3 100 6 0 0 3 3 3
0 16 11 1292 1015 4 2 3 100 6 0 0 3 3 3
5 16 17 25 1
0 16 28 1023 703 4 4 2 100 6 0 0 3 3 3

...and replace them with unit symbols I would like to use.

Again, depending whether you just want to change some units this could be an option, but for a more complete overhaul the use of editors would be more feasible I guess.

yeah, I was thinking of using this option as any changes to the units will show up in the scenario without actually having to change anything....either way will take time but that's ok........trouble is I have been balancing the scenarios with the existing units and 1st Chronicles is actually pretty good It hink as far as balance. Other thing that throws off the balance is using the armor facing rule.....they were all designed to use EA on and AF off anf using AF will swing the balance a bit towards the German side.......but just a bit.

I am still working on the scenarios and probably the easiest way is to just try and balance them with the existing units.

Thanks for the tips. Something to ponder during the winter doldrums :-)

While you're at it, don't forget to add Henry Fonda and Telly Savalas to the Allied OOB.
